Drake has revealed that his father is currently battling cancer, sharing the deeply personal update on his newly released album Iceman.

The disclosure comes on “Make Them Cry,” the opening track of the rapper’s long-anticipated ninth solo studio album, where Drake shifts away from public controversies and industry rivalries to focus on more intimate subjects, including therapy, emotional avoidance, fame, and family. Toward the end of the song, he makes the unexpected revelation about his father, Dennis Graham, rapping that the family is currently navigating the illness and its progression.

The moment stands out as one of the most vulnerable disclosures on an album that arrives under intense public scrutiny. While much of Iceman has already drawn attention for addressing the fallout from Drake’s highly publicized feud with Kendrick Lamar, the album also offers a broader portrait of the artist’s personal life, including struggles that exist far beyond rap headlines.

Throughout the opening track, Drake reflects on emotional pressure and mental health with unusually direct lyrics, referencing therapy and suggesting an ongoing discomfort with confronting certain parts of himself. The mention of his father’s diagnosis reframes the emotional tone of the record’s opening, shifting the focus from celebrity conflict to private family hardship.

Drake has long documented his complicated relationship with Dennis Graham in his music. His parents divorced when he was young, and the rapper has spoken over the years about growing up primarily with his mother, Sandi Graham, while navigating a more distant and at times strained relationship with his father. That dynamic has surfaced repeatedly across his catalog, with Drake often exploring themes of absence, reconciliation, and family expectations.

In more recent years, however, the relationship appeared to improve publicly, with Dennis Graham becoming a more visible presence around Drake’s career and public life. The revelation of Iceman suggests the family is now facing a far more serious personal challenge together.

The album itself marks a significant moment in Drake’s career. Iceman arrives as his first solo studio release since the explosive public feud with Kendrick Lamar, a rivalry that dominated music headlines and reshaped conversation around both artists. The album was released alongside two surprise companion projects, Habibti and Maid Of Honour, expanding the scope of one of Drake’s most ambitious release strategies in recent years.

Musically, the project reunites Drake with longtime producer Noah “40” Shebib while also bringing in a wider group of collaborators, including newer production names and guest appearances from Future and emerging artist Molly Santana. The release follows last year’s collaborative R&B project with PARTYNEXTDOOR, $ome $exy $ongs 4 U.

But amid the rollout, competitive bars, and inevitable analysis of his response to recent public battles, one of the album’s most talked-about moments may ultimately be its quietest: a brief but deeply personal acknowledgment that one of the biggest artists in the world is currently dealing with something far more serious than music.
