CBS has renewed its new drama CIA for a second season, just weeks after the series debuted.

A spinoff of the network’s FBI franchise, CIA follows FBI Special Agent Bill Goodman, played by Nick Gehlfuss, who is reassigned to a joint CIA-FBI task force. He is paired with CIA operative Colin Glass, played by Tom Ellis, as the two carry out covert missions tied to international threats.

The dynamic between the two leads centers on contrasting approaches to the job, with Goodman operating by protocol and Glass taking a more flexible, intelligence-driven approach.

The show builds on the structure of traditional network procedurals, placing its cases within an intelligence setting that extends beyond domestic investigations. Storylines move between local enforcement and global operations, including plots involving terrorism, espionage, and geopolitical conflict.

Procedural dramas have long been a foundation of broadcast television because they are designed for weekly viewing and do not require audiences to follow a continuous storyline. That format has remained consistent even as viewing habits shift toward streaming, where delayed viewing can expand an audience beyond its initial broadcast.

According to Nielsen data cited by CBS, the premiere drew 8.4 million viewers across broadcast and streaming within seven days. The second episode reached 7.6 million over the same period, with both installments more than doubling their same-day audience totals. CBS also stated that the series improved its time slot performance by 39% compared to last fall and has outperformed competing programs in its hour, including The Rookie and The Voice.

The cast includes Natalee Linez and Necar Zadegan, along with crossover appearances from actors within the FBI franchise, including Jeremy Sisto, James Chen, Missy Peregrym, and Alana de la Garza, as the two series continue to share characters and storylines.

The series was created by Dick Wolf, David Hudgins, Nicole Perlman, David Chasteen, and Warren Leight. Mike Weiss currently serves as showrunner following earlier leadership changes during development. It is produced by Universal Television in association with Wolf Entertainment and CBS Studios.

CBS announced the renewal on March 23. CIA airs Mondays at 10 p.m. on CBS and is available to stream on Paramount+.
