ABC Renews Scrubs for a Second Season as Network Finalizes 2026-27 Slate
Scrubs has been renewed by ABC for the 2026–27 television season, extending the return of the long-running medical comedy with what will count as its second season on the network. The pickup follows a strong debut cycle that turned early curiosity into sustained audience traction.
The series opened as the highest-rated comedy telecast on any broadcast network this season among adults 18–49 and reached more than 11 million viewers across platforms in its first 35 days, based on Nielsen data.
Created by Bill Lawrence, Scrubs first aired in 2001 and became known for blending hospital drama with fast-paced comedy and internal narration. The current iteration continues that framework while bringing back core cast members, including Zach Braff, Donald Faison, and Sarah Chalke.
Additional returning performers are expected next season, including Judy Reyes and John C. McGinley, with veteran cast member Ken Jenkins also set to return, and former cast members Johnny Kastl and Scott Foley among those being considered.
The renewal arrives as ABC continues to shape its scripted lineup for the upcoming season, confirming returns for several established series, with Abbott Elementary and High Potential among the titles already renewed.
One remaining decision centers on freshman drama R.J. Decker, which has not yet been confirmed for renewal after trailing its lead-ins in linear ratings but showing stronger placement on streaming, while a separate pilot tied to The Rookie franchise remains under consideration, and at least one comedy pilot has not moved forward as the network narrows its options.
The second season of Scrubs is expected to run for about 10 episodes and will continue under the same creative team, with production handled by 20th Television.
