An interview with Ryan Gosling promoting the upcoming science-fiction film Project Hail Mary took an unusual and unexpectedly humorous turn after a reporter was forced to conduct the conversation from the side of a road following a bus breakdown.

The incident occurred during a press junket interview with Jake Hamilton, a Chicago entertainment journalist from WFLD-TV who also runs the interview platform “Jake’s Takes.” Hamilton had been traveling back from the Grand Canyon to attend the scheduled junket when the bus he was riding in broke down along the highway. Unable to arrive in time for the in-person event, Hamilton connected remotely to the interview while waiting on the roadside with other passengers.

When the video call began, Gosling immediately noticed that the reporter was surrounded by rocky desert terrain rather than a traditional interview setting. The actor initially appeared confused before joking about the dramatic backdrop.

“Are you in a volcano?” Gosling asked, reacting to Hamilton’s location. He then compared the scene to an action movie sequence, remarking that the reporter looked like Tom Cruise performing one of the signature cliffside stunts seen in the long-running Mission: Impossible series.

The unusual circumstances quickly became the focus of the conversation. Gosling joked about the “production value” of the setting, suggesting it looked more like a film shoot than a roadside breakdown. At one point, he even asked Hamilton whether he technically needed a filming permit because the scenery resembled a Western movie location.

Hamilton attempted to redirect the conversation back to Project Hail Mary, but the actor continued to react to the bizarre situation unfolding on screen. Eventually, Gosling shifted from joking to genuine concern, asking the reporter whether assistance was on the way.

Hamilton explained that roadside help was expected to arrive in roughly an hour. To illustrate the situation, he briefly flipped his camera to show the broken-down bus and other passengers waiting nearby.

Gosling then began asking practical questions about the group’s well-being, “Do you have water?” the actor asked. “Are you staying hydrated?”

After Hamilton confirmed he had water, Gosling continued pressing the issue, asking whether there was enough for everyone waiting at the roadside. The actor also joked about whether the stranded travelers had food available, asking if anyone had a power bar while they waited for help to arrive.

The lighthearted exchange quickly circulated online after Hamilton shared clips from the interview on his YouTube channel. Many viewers noted that the situation felt oddly appropriate given the premise of Project Hail Mary, which centers on a man waking up stranded in space and forced to improvise his way through a survival situation.

Based on the 2021 novel by Andy Weir, Project Hail Mary stars Gosling as Ryland Grace, a middle-school science teacher who wakes up aboard a spaceship far from Earth with no memory of how he arrived there. As his memories gradually return, he realizes he has been sent on a desperate mission across the galaxy to prevent a mysterious phenomenon from extinguishing the sun and destroying life on Earth.

The film is directed by the filmmaking duo Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, known for their work on The Lego Movie and the Oscar-winning animated film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. The cast also includes Sandra Hüller.

Before ending the conversation, Gosling told Hamilton he hoped to hear that the stranded passengers had safely gotten back on the road. The actor said he would be curious to learn how the situation turned out, bringing the unexpected interview to a friendly close.
