After decades of fan speculation, countless reunion rumors, and years of development discussions, Romy and Michele are officially back.

20th Century Studios has confirmed that production is underway on a sequel to Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion, the 1997 comedy that evolved from a modest box-office performer into one of the most beloved cult films of its era. Mira Sorvino and Lisa Kudrow are returning as Romy White and Michele Weinberger, the inseparable best friends whose misguided attempt to impress former classmates became a defining comedy for a generation of viewers.

The sequel will stream exclusively on Hulu in the United States and on Disney+ internationally, marking the first time audiences will see the characters together since the original film premiered nearly three decades ago.

For years, the possibility of a follow-up existed mostly as wishful thinking among fans. While many cult favorites have received reboots, remakes, or revivals in recent years, Romy and Michele remained largely untouched despite their enduring popularity. The film's reputation only grew with time, fueled by home video, cable television reruns, and a devoted fan base that helped transform the comedy into a cultural touchstone long after its theatrical release.

The original film followed Romy and Michele as they prepared to attend their 10-year high school reunion. Embarrassed by their lack of traditional success, the pair concocted elaborate lies about their careers and accomplishments in an effort to impress former classmates who had once mocked them. What could have been a simple high school reunion comedy instead became a surprisingly sharp and affectionate story about friendship, self-worth, and refusing to conform to other people's expectations.

Part of the film's lasting appeal came from the chemistry between Sorvino and Kudrow, whose performances turned Romy and Michele into instantly recognizable pop-culture characters. Their friendship, rather than romance or rivalry, sat at the center of the story, a relatively rare dynamic for mainstream studio comedies at the time.

The sequel will reunite much of the original cast. Janeane Garofalo is returning as Heather, while Alan Cumming will once again play Sandy Frink, the eccentric classmate who became one of the film's most memorable supporting characters. Camryn Manheim and Julia Campbell are also reprising their roles, further strengthening the connection between the new project and the original movie.

Behind the camera, the production is bringing back key creative figures as well. Robin Schiff, who created the characters and wrote the original screenplay, has penned the sequel. Tim Federle, whose credits include High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, is directing.

While plot details remain under wraps, the film has assembled a cast of newcomers that includes Keegan-Michael Key, Rob Huebel, Breckin Meyer, Patrick Warburton, and Nathan Lee Graham. The studio has not revealed how its characters fit into the story, nor has it disclosed what brings Romy and Michele back together for a new adventure.

The return of costume designer Mona May is likely to be particularly exciting for longtime fans. The original film's colorful wardrobe became almost as iconic as its dialogue, helping establish the distinctive visual identity that continues to be celebrated decades later. From the unforgettable reunion dresses to the film's unapologetically bright aesthetic, fashion played a major role in transforming Romy and Michele into a cult favorite.

The timing of the sequel arrives during a period when Hollywood is increasingly looking to establish intellectual property. Yet unlike many legacy sequels, Romy and Michele returns with the actors most closely associated with the material, along with the original writer responsible for creating the characters in the first place. That continuity may prove critical as the project attempts to satisfy audiences who have spent years wondering what happened to Romy and Michele after the events of the first film.
