More than two decades after audiences first met awkward San Francisco teenager Mia Thermopolis, The Princess Diaries franchise is preparing its return, and according to director Adele Lim, longtime fans can expect some familiar faces when the third installment finally reaches theaters.

Speaking on the red carpet at the Gold Gala over the weekend, Lim offered one of the clearest updates yet on Princess Diaries 3, confirming that development is moving forward and suggesting the creative team is approaching the sequel with a strong awareness of the emotional attachment audiences still have to the series. “We just want to make the story right because it is a franchise that is so beloved by so many people,” Lim said.

That may sound like standard sequel diplomacy, but The Princess Diaries occupies a particular place in early-2000s studio nostalgia. Released in 2001 and directed by Garry Marshall, the original film transformed Anne Hathaway from newcomer to major Hollywood talent, while cementing Julie Andrews’ Queen Clarisse Renaldi as one of modern family cinema’s most beloved royal figures. Loosely adapted from Meg Cabot’s bestselling novels, the film followed Mia, an awkward American teenager who discovers she is heir to the fictional European kingdom of Genovia.

Its 2004 sequel, The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement, leaned further into fairy-tale spectacle, expanding the mythology of Genovia while shifting Mia’s journey from identity crisis to royal responsibility.

Lim made clear that the new film will no longer be centered on teenage transformation, but on adult power. “There are so many movies that are wish fulfillment for princesses,” she said. “We don’t have a lot of wish fulfillment movies for queens.”

That creative angle offers the clearest indication yet of how the film intends to evolve. Rather than retread the familiar makeover-and-self-discovery formula of the original, Princess Diaries 3 appears positioned to explore Mia as an established monarch navigating adulthood, leadership, and legacy.

Anne Hathaway has already been confirmed to return as Mia Thermopolis, now Queen of Genovia. Beyond that, official casting details remain under wraps, though Lim strongly hinted that audiences should expect recognizable returning characters.

“If you were a fan of the original first two movies, I think you can look forward to a lot of fun returns,” she said.

She stopped short of naming specific cast members, but the comment will inevitably fuel speculation around whether original stars such as Heather Matarazzo, Chris Pine, Mandy Moore, Sandra Oh, Héctor Elizondo, or even Julie Andrews could reappear in some capacity.

The Julie Andrews question remains especially sensitive. The Oscar-winning actress, now 89, has previously expressed affection for the franchise while also acknowledging practical realities surrounding age and performance. Whether the production builds around her return, or respectfully writes around Queen Clarisse’s absence remains one of the biggest unanswered questions.

Lim also confirmed that the film will take audiences fully into Genovia itself. “We’re going to be able to shoot in Europe and really show the audience Genovia in its full glory,” she said.

That marks a meaningful shift visually. While the earlier films relied heavily on production design and selective location work to build the fictional monarchy, the third installment appears to be aiming for a larger-scale, more immersive depiction of Mia’s royal world.

Lim brings a different creative sensibility to the franchise than its original architect. Best known as the co-writer of Crazy Rich Asians and director of Joy Ride, she has built a reputation for balancing emotional storytelling with sharp commercial instincts. Her involvement suggests Disney is not simply reviving a nostalgic property, but attempting to modernize it for an audience that has aged alongside the character.

Lim pointed out that many viewers who watched the original in theaters are now adults, some, like her, mothers themselves. That perspective may help explain why the sequel appears less interested in repeating adolescent fantasy than in reframing royal aspiration through adulthood.

Outside Princess Diaries, Lim also discussed another major franchise project currently in development: HBO’s planned television continuation of Crazy Rich Asians. The filmmaker confirmed the series is moving forward and described television as an opportunity to expand Kevin Kwan’s world beyond what was possible in the 2018 film adaptation. While stars Constance Wu and Henry Golding have not officially signed on, Lim said returning cast involvement remains the intention.
