Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson Reunite for Apple TV Comedy Brothers
Apple TV has set a September premiere date for Brothers, a new eight-episode comedy that reunites Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson as fictionalized versions of themselves, playing lifelong friends whose bond is thrown into chaos when they learn they might actually be brothers.
The series begins with a family disruption. After Woody’s daughter’s wedding falls apart, he brings his family to Matthew’s ranch in Austin for what is meant to be a reset.
Everything changes when Matthew’s mother, Ma Mac, played by Holland Taylor, accidentally reveals a decades-old secret suggesting that the two men may share more than a close friendship. While Woody searches for the truth, Matthew faces a separate crossroads as he considers a possible run for governor of Texas.
A piece of celebrity lore sits underneath the story. McConaughey has previously discussed the possibility that he and Harrelson may share a family connection, saying the idea surfaced after a comment from his mother about knowing Harrelson’s father. Brothers uses that rumor as a narrative device for a scripted story about identity, fame, and chosen family.
Texas adds another layer to the comedy. McConaughey’s public image has long been tied to the state, and the Austin ranch setting lets the show play with that association. The possible governor storyline also echoes the actor’s past public comments about political life, while keeping the series in the world of character comedy.
Harrelson brings a different kind of comic tension to the family mystery. His character arrives as a friend in crisis, then becomes the one most determined to uncover the truth, forcing a familiar friendship to shift under the weight of a bigger question.
Brothers is not the first time McConaughey and Harrelson have shared the screen. The pair starred in the first season of HBO’s True Detective in 2014, where their chemistry helped turn the crime drama into one of the decade’s most talked-about television debuts.
Lee Eisenberg serves as showrunner and executive producer on the series, which is produced for Apple TV by Paramount Television Studios. McConaughey and Harrelson also executive produce, along with Natalie Sandy, David West Read, Trish Hofmann, Bill Bost, Jason Winer, David Finkel, Brett Baer, and Jeremy Plager. Trent O’Donnell directs multiple episodes, including the pilot.
Also featured in the ensemble cast are Natalie Martinez, Brittany Ishibashi, Nolan Almeida, Ella Grace Helton, Noah Carganilla, Highdee Kuan, and Oona Yaffe.
Brothers will premiere on Apple TV on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, with its first two episodes. New episodes will be released weekly on Wednesdays through November 4.
