Maggie Gyllenhaal is lining up her next directing project at Warner Bros., with the filmmaker set to adapt Rachel Kushner’s bestselling novel Creation Lake for the studio.

The project marks another collaboration between Gyllenhaal and Warner Bros. following the release of The Bride!, her ambitious reimagining of the classic Bride of Frankenstein story. According to reports, the studio has acquired the rights to Kushner’s novel with Gyllenhaal attached to produce and direct the adaptation.

Published in 2024, Creation Lake quickly became one of the most celebrated novels of the year. The book follows Sadie Smith, a 34-year-old American undercover operative who is dispatched to rural France to infiltrate an environmental activist collective. Skilled in deception, manipulation, and seduction, Sadie initially approaches the assignment with the detachment expected of someone in her profession. However, as she becomes increasingly immersed in the group and its ideology, the mission begins to challenge her own beliefs, forcing her to reconsider long-held assumptions about power, politics, and identity.

Blending espionage, psychological drama, and dark comedy, the novel earned widespread critical acclaim upon release. In addition to becoming a New York Times bestseller, Creation Lake was shortlisted for the Booker Prize and received recognition from several major literary organizations, including longlist placements for both the National Book Award and the Pen/Faulkner Award for Fiction.

For Warner Bros., the decision to continue its relationship with Gyllenhaal comes despite the mixed commercial performance of The Bride!. Released earlier this year, the film offered a feminist, Depression-era reinterpretation of the iconic Universal monster tale and featured a star-studded cast led by Jessie Buckley and Christian Bale. While the project generated significant attention for its bold creative vision and distinctive visual style, it struggled to find a wide audience at the box office, earning approximately $24 million worldwide against a reported production budget of $90 million.

Critical reaction to The Bride! proved similarly divided. Some reviewers praised Gyllenhaal’s willingness to take creative risks with a familiar property, while others questioned the film’s ambitious narrative and unconventional approach. Regardless of the response, the project reinforced Gyllenhaal’s reputation as a filmmaker interested in challenging material rather than pursuing safer commercial choices.

That reputation was established with her directorial debut, The Lost Daughter, which remains one of the most acclaimed literary adaptations of the decade. Based on Elena Ferrante’s novel of the same name, the psychological drama premiered in 2021 before earning widespread praise during awards season. Gyllenhaal received an Academy Award nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay, while the film itself collected three Oscar nominations overall. The success of positioned her as one of Hollywood’s most promising emerging directors and demonstrated her ability to translate complex literary works to the screen.

Before moving behind the camera, Gyllenhaal built an acclaimed acting career spanning more than two decades. She received an Academy Award nomination for her supporting role in Crazy Heart and won a Golden Globe for her performance in the acclaimed television miniseries The Honorable Woman. Her work across film and television has consistently earned recognition for its emotional depth and willingness to explore complicated characters.

News of the Creation Lake adaptation arrives as Gyllenhaal prepares to be honored at the upcoming Karlovy Vary International Film Festival. The actress and filmmaker is set to receive the festival’s President’s Award during the opening ceremony, joining fellow actor-turned-director Jesse Eisenberg among this year’s honorees. As part of the event, she will also present a screening of The Bride! to festival audiences.
