Pop artist Billie Eilish is reportedly in discussions to take on her first leading role in a feature film, with the Grammy and Academy Award-winning musician being considered to portray Esther Greenwood in a new adaptation of The Bell Jar. The project would mark a significant expansion of Eilish’s creative career beyond music and into dramatic cinema.

The film will be directed by filmmaker Sarah Polley, whose recent work includes the critically acclaimed Women Talking, which earned the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay in 2023. Industry reports indicate that Polley is also responsible for adapting the screenplay from Sylvia Plath’s only novel, a semi-autobiographical work first published in 1963 that has since become a landmark of American literature.

Set in the 1950s, The Bell Jar follows Esther Greenwood, a young woman navigating academic pressures, professional expectations, and deteriorating mental health as she struggles to find her place in a rigid social structure. The novel is widely recognized for its candid depiction of depression and the societal pressures placed on women during the postwar era, themes that have contributed to its continued cultural relevance decades after publication.

According to industry trade reports, the adaptation is being developed with producer Joy Gorman Wettels through her production company, Joy Coalition. Additional production partners reportedly include Plan B Entertainment and StudioCanal, while Focus Features is said to be in discussions regarding distribution rights. Early reports about Eilish’s possible involvement first surfaced in entertainment newsletters before being confirmed by major industry outlets.

If finalized, the role would represent Eilish’s most prominent acting project to date. She previously appeared in the 2023 streaming series Swarm, created by Donald Glover and Janine Nabers. In the psychological drama, Eilish portrayed a mysterious cult figure who becomes entangled with the show’s central character, played by Dominique Fishback.

Glover later praised Eilish’s instincts as a performer, noting in a 2024 interview that she demonstrated a strong understanding of narrative and character despite her limited acting experience. Her appearance in the series was widely seen as a calculated but low-profile introduction to acting, allowing her to experiment outside the expectations of her music career.

Despite her relatively recent entry into acting, Eilish has already established herself as one of the most decorated young musicians in the industry. She has won two Academy Awards for Best Original Song: first for “No Time to Die,” written for the 2021 James Bond film No Time to Die, and again for “What Was I Made For?” from the 2023 blockbuster Barbie.

In past interviews, Eilish has acknowledged a long-standing interest in acting but admitted she once lacked confidence in her abilities. Speaking to Variety in 2023, she described acting as a personal ambition she had hesitated to pursue publicly, citing early self-doubt about her skills.

Beyond acting, Eilish is also continuing to explore filmmaking. She is expected to co-direct a concert film connected to her Hit Me Hard and Soft tour, reportedly working alongside filmmaker James Cameron. The project reflects her growing involvement in visual storytelling, an area she has increasingly embraced through music videos and conceptual live performances.

The potential casting of Eilish in The Bell Jar reflects a broader trend of musicians successfully transitioning into film, particularly those with strong visual identities and narrative-driven artistry. For Eilish, whose work often explores themes of vulnerability, identity, and emotional struggle, the material may represent a natural thematic extension of the storytelling already present in her music.

While no official casting announcement has been finalized and production timelines have not been publicly confirmed, the project is already drawing attention due to the combination of high-profile creative talent and the enduring literary significance of Plath’s novel.
