Lily Collins is set to play Audrey Hepburn in a new feature focused on the making of Breakfast at Tiffany's, the enduring romantic comedy that helped define modern screen glamour.

The project is based on Sam Wasson’s book Fifth Avenue, 5 A.M.: Audrey Hepburn, Breakfast at Tiffany’s and the Dawn of the Modern Woman, which chronicles the film’s turbulent development and cultural impact. Collins will also serve as a producer on the adaptation. Alena Smith, creator of the Apple TV+ series Dickinson, has been tapped to write the screenplay. A director has not yet been announced.

Released in 1961 and adapted from Truman Capote’s novella, Breakfast at Tiffany’s follows socialite Holly Golightly as she forms a relationship with a struggling writer who moves into her Manhattan apartment building. Hepburn’s portrayal of Holly, particularly the opening scene outside the Tiffany & Co. flagship store on Fifth Avenue, became one of the most recognizable images in film history.

The upcoming film will center not only on Hepburn but also on the creative tensions and behind-the-scenes conflicts that shaped the production. According to project details, the story will explore Capote’s dissatisfaction with the studio’s casting decision; he had envisioned Marilyn Monroe in the lead role and believed Paramount “double-crossed” him by choosing Hepburn. The film will also depict on-set incidents, including a reported near-electrocution of a crew member during the shoot of the opening sequence.

Other historical figures involved in the original production are expected to appear as characters, including director Blake Edwards and costume designer Edith Head. Casting for those roles has not yet been announced.

Collins shared news of the project on social media, writing that it comes after nearly a decade of development and a lifelong admiration for Hepburn. The actor has frequently cited Hepburn as a personal and professional influence, and comparisons between the two, particularly in fashion circles, have followed Collins throughout her career.

The film is backed by Imagine Entertainment, with Brian Grazer, Jeb Brody, and Justin Wilkes producing. Additional producers include Charlie McDowell and Alex Orlovsky for Case Study Films, alongside Scott LaStaiti. Wasson and Brandon Millan will executive produce, as will Michael Shamberg and Marc Gilbar. Development oversight is being handled by Joyce Choi.

Collins is currently best known for starring in Netflix’s Emily in Paris, which has been renewed for a sixth season. Her film credits include Rules Don’t Apply and Mank.

The untitled project joins a growing number of films revisiting the creation of classic Hollywood works.
