Lionsgate has acquired the rights to adapt The Correspondent, the bestselling debut novel by Virginia Evans, following a competitive bidding process involving multiple studios. The film will star Jane Fonda, who is also attached as a producer.

The project brings together a team with experience in both literary adaptations and character-driven storytelling. Cat Vasko has been hired to write the screenplay and will serve as an executive producer, while Todd Lieberman of Hidden Pictures will produce alongside Fonda.

The film is based on Evans’ novel, which was published in 2025 and quickly gained traction, selling more than one million copies and spending several weeks on The New York Times bestseller list.

At the center of the story is Sybil Van Antwerp, a retired lawyer who maintains control over her life through written correspondence. The character is described as sharp, opinionated, and deeply structured, relying on letters to communicate with friends, family, and even figures beyond her immediate circle.

The narrative shifts when a letter from Sybil’s past resurfaces, forcing her to revisit unresolved emotional experiences tied to grief and regret. The story unfolds through both present-day interactions and reflections triggered by her writing, positioning the character’s internal voice as a central element.

Fonda’s involvement as both lead actor and producer reflects her continued focus on projects centered around complex female characters. Over the course of her career, she has taken on similar dual roles in films such as Coming Home, On Golden Pond, and The China Syndrome, as well as more recent work in television.

Her participation is expected to shape both the tone and direction of the adaptation, particularly given the character-driven nature of the source material.

The acquisition follows what Lionsgate described as a highly competitive bidding process. Erin Westerman, president of the studio’s motion picture group, said the project resonated internally due to the strength of the central character and the emotional themes of the story.

The film will be overseen at Lionsgate by Chelsea Kujawa and Pavan Kalidindi, with Carly Kleinbart Elter and Aydan Cohen overseeing for Hidden Pictures. Lieberman’s company has previously worked on adaptations, including The Housemaid, which performed strongly at the box office.

Studios have increasingly turned to commercially successful novels when developing new projects. The Correspondent, which has sold more than one million copies, arrives with a built-in audience, a factor that continues to guide greenlight decisions.

The project remains in early development. No director or release date has been announced.
