Anya Taylor-Joy is officially headed to Middle-earth. The actress has joined the cast of The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, the upcoming Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema film directed by Andy Serkis, who is also returning to portray the franchise’s most infamous creature.

Taylor-Joy will play Seren, a Sindar Elf of the Woodland Realm described as a trusted and highly skilled agent of King Thranduil. While plot details surrounding the character remain under wraps, the role places Taylor-Joy alongside several familiar faces from the Lord of the Rings universe as the franchise prepares to return to theaters with its first live-action feature set in Middle-earth since The Hobbit trilogy concluded more than a decade ago.

The actress joins a cast that already includes Serkis as Gollum, Ian McKellen as Gandalf, Elijah Wood as Frodo Baggins, and Lee Pace, who reprises his role as the Elven king Thranduil. New additions to the ensemble include Kate Winslet, Jamie Dornan, and Leo Woodall. Warner Bros. has set a worldwide release date of Dec. 17, 2027.

The Hunt for Gollum will focus on one of the most important untold chapters from Tolkien’s mythology, chronicling the search for Gollum in the years leading up to the events of The Fellowship of the Ring. The story has long existed in the background of Tolkien’s lore and was referenced throughout the original trilogy, but it has never been the central focus of a feature film. The project is expected to explore the efforts of key figures across Middle-earth as they race to locate Gollum before the growing threat surrounding the One Ring reaches a critical point.

The film also reunites much of the creative team responsible for the Oscar-winning Lord of the Rings trilogy. Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens, and Zane Weiner are producing the project, while Walsh and Boyens are once again involved in adapting Tolkien’s work for the screen. Screenwriters Phoebe Gittins and Arty Papageorgiou have joined the veteran creative team in developing the screenplay.

Taylor-Joy’s casting represents one of the highest-profile additions announced for the film so far and further signals Warner Bros.’ ambition for the project. Since breaking out with The Witch, the actress has become one of Hollywood’s most in-demand performers, building a résumé that spans prestige dramas, major studio franchises, and critically acclaimed television projects. Her recent work has included Furiosa, the latest installment in George Miller’s Mad Max saga, as well as Denis Villeneuve’s Dune franchise.

While Amazon has explored the Second Age through The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, The Hunt for Gollum marks Warner Bros.’ return to the timeline and characters most closely associated with Jackson’s beloved trilogy. The involvement of Serkis, Jackson, Walsh, and Boyens has helped fuel anticipation among longtime fans eager to revisit that version of Middle-earth.

The studio is already looking beyond The Hunt for Gollum. Another film, The Lord of the Rings: Shadow of the Past, is currently in development, signaling Warner Bros.’ broader plans to continue building stories within Tolkien’s universe.
