Amanda Seyfried Says Learning Joni Mitchell’s Blue Left Her in Tears After Shelved Biopic Preparation
Amanda Seyfried spent years preparing to portray Joni Mitchell in a planned biopic that ultimately never made it to production, but the actress says the experience fundamentally changed her relationship with music.
In a new interview with GQ, Seyfried reflected on the extensive preparation she undertook for the role, revealing that she learned to play every song from Mitchell’s landmark 1971 album Blue across multiple instruments. The project, which would have explored Mitchell’s relationship with longtime manager and Asylum Records co-founder Elliot Roberts, was eventually shelved, but not before Seyfried immersed herself in the singer-songwriter’s catalog and creative world.
According to Seyfried, the process became far more demanding than she initially anticipated. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she dedicated herself to mastering the songs on Blue, learning arrangements on guitar, piano, and dulcimer, the instrument closely associated with several of Mitchell’s most beloved recordings. The challenge was particularly significant given the album’s reputation among musicians. Widely regarded as one of the greatest singer-songwriter records ever made, features unconventional tunings, intricate melodies, and emotionally complex compositions that have influenced generations of artists.
“The day that I finished learning the last song on the album, ‘The Last Time I Saw Richard,’ I fucking wept,” Seyfried said. “I felt like a bona fide musician, like I belong here. I felt like I had put my own flag on the top of the mountain.”
The actress also described the process as a personal achievement, comparing the experience of learning the album to climbing a mountain. By the time she completed the final song, she said she felt she had earned a deeper understanding of Mitchell’s artistry and musical language.
The preparation also provided Seyfried with a rare opportunity to spend time with Mitchell herself. During the development process, the actress visited the legendary songwriter at her Los Angeles home, where the pair listened to Blue together and discussed the record that many critics consider Mitchell’s defining work.
Recalling one of those meetings, Seyfried said Mitchell suggested they sit down, light a fire, and listen to the album from beginning to end. Afterward, Mitchell reflected on the record’s minimalist nature, remarking on how sparse the arrangements sounded. Seyfried saw the album differently. For the actress, the stripped-down quality that Mitchell identified is precisely what has made Blue endure for more than five decades. The album remains one of the most celebrated releases in popular music history, praised for its vulnerability, poetic songwriting, and emotional honesty. Songs such as “A Case of You,” “River,” and “California” have become cornerstones of Mitchell’s catalog and continue to resonate with listeners decades after their release.
Some of the musical skills Seyfried developed during the preparation process eventually reached a wider audience. In 2024, she appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and surprised viewers by performing Mitchell’s “California” on the dulcimer. The performance quickly circulated online, earning widespread praise from fans and musicians alike.
Looking back on the moment, Seyfried said its popularity stemmed largely from its spontaneity. Rather than serving as a carefully orchestrated promotional appearance, the performance felt genuine and joyful, something audiences immediately responded to.
Although Seyfried’s planned Mitchell project ultimately failed to move forward, interest in bringing the singer-songwriter’s story to the screen has not disappeared. Cameron Crowe, who was attached to the earlier project, remains involved in another film centered on Mitchell’s life.
That production is expected to focus on Mitchell during her later years, with Meryl Streep reportedly attached to portray the music icon. Few details about the project have been publicly revealed, and the film remains largely under wraps. However, Seyfried acknowledged that some fans have questioned the direction of the new adaptation and have sought answers from Crowe about his vision for the story.
