After spending years portraying one of television’s most recognizable characters, Alexa Demie is opening up about the personal toll Euphoria took on her behind the scenes.

In a new conversation with novelist Ottessa Moshfegh for i-D, the actress reflected on her experience playing Maddy Perez throughout HBO’s hit drama, revealing that the show’s second season left her emotionally exhausted and ultimately motivated her to step away from Hollywood for a period of time. While many fans assumed the recently concluded third season would have been the most difficult chapter of the series to film, Demie said it was actually the second season that proved to be the most challenging. “Season 2 was the hardest season, by far,” she said.

The actress explained that filming the final season felt markedly different. Rather than struggling under the weight of the role, she viewed the experience as the conclusion of a long personal and creative journey. “It truly felt like the third act of my journey with the show and I felt held,” Demie said.

That sense of peace was absent when production wrapped on the previous season. Looking back, Demie admitted she reached a point where she wanted distance from nearly everything connected to the series. “After Season 2, that was the catalyst for me to pull away from Hollywood, away from acting and being in the limelight, and come back into myself,” she said.

The actress also revealed that she underestimated how deeply she had immersed herself in Maddy Perez, a character who became one of the defining figures of modern television. Known for her confidence, sharp one-liners, and unapologetic attitude, Maddy quickly emerged as a fan favorite after Euphoria premiered, generating countless memes, fashion trends, and online discussions. For Demie, embodying the character eventually blurred the line between performance and reality.

“I didn’t realize how method I actually am — or was,” she said. “I created this character, but then I became her.” Demie described using Maddy as a kind of protective shield. While the character projected confidence and fearlessness, the actress said she is naturally far more reserved in her everyday life. “Because I am naturally more shy, unless I’m performing, I used her as a mask,” she explained.

Over time, that connection became so strong that separating herself from the role proved unexpectedly emotional. Demie said she eventually realized just how intertwined her own identity had become with the character she spent years portraying.

“There is a deep-rooted connection to her, but I’m not her. I’m not Maddy,” she said. “I remember a moment where I realized Maddy was so enmeshed in me, that when I pulled her out, I just started crying.” The actress also addressed a misconception that followed her throughout the series’ run. As Maddy’s popularity exploded, many viewers assumed Demie was simply playing a version of herself on screen. According to the actress, nothing could have been further from the truth.

Demie acknowledged that part of that perception stemmed from her own preference for privacy. Unlike many actors whose personal lives are highly visible online, she has consistently kept a low profile outside of her professional work.

Her comments arrive just days after Euphoria aired its final episode, bringing an end to one of the most influential and polarizing television dramas of the past decade. The HBO series became a cultural phenomenon after its debut, helping launch its young cast into global stardom while generating intense discussion around its depiction of addiction, relationships, sexuality, and trauma.

The finale itself has sparked mixed reactions from viewers, particularly over the fate of several major characters. Speaking about the conclusion, creator Sam Levinson defended the ending, describing it as the most honest way to close the story. “It felt like an honest ending,” Levinson said, adding that he wanted the final episodes to explore grief and the emotional consequences that come with it.

Looking ahead, the actress said she feels energized by the prospect of creating from a healthier and more authentic place. After stepping back from the spotlight and reconnecting with herself, Demie believes her next chapter will be shaped not by the character that made her famous, but by the person she has become since letting that character go.
