Singer-songwriter Violet Grohl is preparing to step fully into her own artistic spotlight with the announcement of her debut album, Be Sweet to Me, scheduled for release May 29 through Republic Records. Alongside the announcement, Grohl has released a new single titled “595,” accompanied by a music video directed by filmmaker Nikki Milan Houston.
The upcoming record marks Grohl’s most substantial solo project to date and represents a significant step forward after several years of guest performances and collaborations. While she has frequently appeared alongside her father, Dave Grohl of the Foo Fighters, Be Sweet to Me signals her transition from collaborator to fully independent artist.
According to press materials, the album was recorded between late 2024 and early 2025 at the Los Angeles home studio of producer Justin Raisen, known for his work with alternative and indie artists. The sessions reportedly brought together a rotating group of musicians, drawing inspiration from the collaborative spirit of the legendary session collective known as The Wrecking Crew, who contributed to numerous influential recordings during the 1960s and 1970s.
The earliest track to emerge from those sessions was “Thum,” which Grohl released in September as an early preview of the album’s direction. In statements surrounding the project, Grohl has cited late-1980s and early-1990s alternative rock as a major influence on the album’s sound and aesthetic.
Among the artists she has pointed to as inspirations are Pixies, Soundgarden, Cocteau Twins, and The Breeders. Grohl has described that era as particularly impactful due to what she sees as its emotional honesty and visual identity.
“There’s something so powerful about that period of music,” she said in a statement. “From the messaging to the visuals, it feels authentic and raw. I’ve been listening to that music since I was a kid.”
Earlier this year, Grohl also released the song “What’s Heaven Without You,” a track shaped by personal grief and events that affected the Los Angeles creative community. She said the song was written following the devastating Altadena-area wildfires as well as the death of influential filmmaker David Lynch.
Grohl said the track came together during an emotional studio session with collaborators Persia Numan and Raisen, describing it as a way of processing loss through music.
“A few days after the chaos and devastation of the LA fires, we came together in our sadness and grief and let it pour out into this song,” she said.
Although Be Sweet to Me represents her formal debut album, Grohl has been steadily building experience as a performer. In 2021, she recorded a cover of “Nausea” by Los Angeles punk band X with her father. The pair later performed the song on Jimmy Kimmel Live! alongside a lineup of notable musicians, including Krist Novoselic, Dave Lombardo, and Greg Kurstin.
She has also appeared onstage with the Foo Fighters multiple times, including during the band’s emotional 2022 tribute concerts honoring their late drummer Taylor Hawkins. Those performances introduced her to a wider audience and demonstrated her vocal range in a live rock setting.
In 2023, Grohl again collaborated with her father on the Foo Fighters track “Show Me How,” further signaling her growing role within the broader musical circle surrounding the band.
With the release of Be Sweet to Me, however, Grohl appears focused on establishing her own creative identity separate from her family’s legacy. The project’s influences, collaborators, and original material suggest an artist intent on defining her own sound while still acknowledging the musical environment she grew up in.
The album will be available in multiple physical formats, including several vinyl variants and CD, in addition to a digital release. Pre-orders are currently underway ahead of the May release date.
As anticipation builds, Be Sweet to Me may serve as the clearest indication yet of how Violet Grohl plans to navigate the transition from emerging artist to a standalone voice in alternative music.
