Dave Grohl has confirmed that the Foo Fighters have completed work on a new studio album, signaling the band’s first full-length release since 2023’s But Here We Are. The news came during a concert in Tasmania over the weekend, where Grohl told the audience that new music is finished and that the band plans to return to Australia sooner than expected.

“This won’t be the last time you see us,” Grohl said from the stage. “We’ll be back here sooner than you think and before my next birthday.” He then added that the group had “just finished” a new record, drawing a loud response from the crowd.

Grohl’s birthday falls on January 14, suggesting that the Foo Fighters could resume touring globally within the next year. The band has already announced a North American stadium run scheduled for late summer, beginning August 4 in Toronto and concluding September 26 in Las Vegas.

The forthcoming album follows But Here We Are, the band’s 11th studio release and their first after the death of longtime drummer Taylor Hawkins in 2022. That record was widely viewed as a cathartic and emotionally direct project, with Grohl handling drum duties in the studio. For subsequent live dates, the band recruited Josh Freese, though they parted ways with him earlier this year. The Foo Fighters have not yet announced who will serve as their permanent drummer moving forward.

When unveiling their 2026 tour dates earlier this year, the band also released a new song, “Asking for a Friend.” In a statement accompanying the track, Grohl described it as a reflection on patience and endurance, writing that it was meant for “those who have waited patiently in the cold, relying on hope and faith for their horizon to appear.” He added that the song was “one of many to come,” a comment that now aligns with his confirmation that a full album is complete.

Saturday’s performance at UTAS Stadium in Launceston marked the Foo Fighters’ first show in Tasmania in more than a decade, and their first appearance on the island since Hawkins’ passing. Grohl emphasized the significance of the moment, noting the band’s long-standing connection to Australian audiences and describing the concert as a special, one-off event.

During the set, Grohl also revisited the story behind the 2007 song “Ballad of the Beaconsfield Miners,” written in response to a real-life mining disaster in Tasmania. He invited Brant Webb, one of the miners rescued after being trapped underground, to join the band onstage.

Details surrounding the new album, including its title and release date, have not yet been announced.
