Usher Defends Diddy’s Legacy While Acknowledging Controversy Surrounding Mogul
Usher says he has “nothing negative” to say about Sean Combs, choosing instead to focus on the music mogul’s impact on the industry despite the serious allegations and legal battles that have defined Combs’ recent years.
In an interview with Forbes and comments shared during an appearance on The Enterprise Zone, Usher reflected on his relationship with Combs, who played a key role early in his career. The singer lived with Combs in New York as a teenager while working on his 1994 debut album, an experience he credits as formative both creatively and professionally.
When asked to describe Combs in a single word, Usher responded: “legacy.”
The remark comes at a time when Combs remains at the center of ongoing legal scrutiny. Since late 2023, the Bad Boy Records founder has faced numerous allegations of sexual assault and physical abuse, beginning with a lawsuit filed by his former partner, Cassie Ventura. That case was followed by dozens of additional civil suits raising similar claims.
Combs has denied the sexual assault allegations. In a federal case that drew widespread attention, he was acquitted of sex trafficking charges but convicted on lesser prostitution-related offenses. He is currently serving a four-year prison sentence and appealing the conviction.
Despite the gravity of those developments, Usher framed his perspective as separate from the broader public narrative, emphasizing that his personal experience with Combs differed from the accounts that have emerged in recent years. “My experience was not what the world has seen,” Usher said, adding that he believes Combs’ contributions to music and business should not be overlooked.
The singer acknowledged that his stance may be controversial, particularly given the volume and nature of the allegations. However, he argued that it is possible to recognize both an individual’s flaws and their professional influence.
“I’m not saying anyone is perfect,” Usher said. “But I can’t ignore what he built.”
Usher specifically pointed to Combs’ role in shaping opportunities for Black artists and entrepreneurs, crediting him with helping redefine how musicians could operate as business figures. He described Combs as someone who demonstrated how to translate cultural influence into tangible success, setting a model that others in the industry have followed.
At the same time, the legal proceedings against Combs have included detailed testimony regarding past behavior. During his trial, Combs’ legal team acknowledged instances of domestic violence in his relationship with Ventura. Testimony presented in court described multiple alleged incidents of physical abuse, including a widely circulated surveillance video from 2016.
Additional testimony from former collaborator Dawn Richard indicated that Usher was present during at least one confrontation between Combs and Ventura at an industry event. Usher did not address that specific claim in his recent comments.
His remarks instead focused on separating his personal history with Combs from the broader legal and public discourse. He described the lessons he learned during his early career, particularly regarding business and branding, as central to his current perspective.
