Teyana Taylor to Receive BET’s 2026 Icon of the Year Award Following Landmark Year Across Music, Film and Directing
Actress Teyana Taylor will add another major honor to an already remarkable year later this month when she receives BET’s 2026 Icon of the Year Award, a recognition that reflects her growing influence across music, film, fashion, and visual storytelling.
BET announced Tuesday that Taylor has been selected as this year’s recipient of the award, which celebrates artists whose work has left a lasting impact on entertainment and popular culture. The honor will be presented during the 2026 BET Awards on June 28 at Los Angeles’ Peacock Theater.
The designation arrives at a pivotal moment in Taylor’s career. Long admired as a performer capable of moving seamlessly between music, dance, acting, and directing, Taylor has spent the last several years expanding her creative footprint well beyond the traditional boundaries of a recording artist. While many entertainers find success in one lane, Taylor has built a reputation for excelling in several, establishing herself as one of the most versatile figures in contemporary entertainment.
In announcing the honor, BET described the Icon of the Year distinction as recognition for artists whose influence extends beyond commercial achievements. The award has become one of the network’s most significant acknowledgments, celebrating individuals whose creative contributions help shape conversations across culture, fashion, music, and media.
Connie Orlando, BET’s Executive Vice President of Specials, Music Programming and Music Strategy, said Taylor’s career reflects the type of multidimensional impact the award was created to recognize.
“Teyana Taylor is the embodiment of what it means to be an icon in this moment,” Orlando said in a statement. “She doesn’t ask for a seat at the table; she builds the table, designs the rooms, and sets the tone for everyone who walks in.” The honor caps a period of extraordinary momentum for the Harlem native, whose career has evolved dramatically since she first emerged in the mid-2000s.
Taylor initially gained attention as a dancer and choreographer, earning early support from some of the industry's biggest names, including Beyoncé, Jay-Z, and Pharrell Williams. Even before releasing a full-length album, she had developed a reputation as a creative force whose talents extended beyond performance.
That reputation only grew after she launched her recording career. Her debut album, VII, arrived in 2014 and established her as a compelling voice within modern R&B. Over the following decade, Taylor continued to release music while steadily expanding her role behind the scenes as a creative director, visual architect, and filmmaker.
Unlike many artists who separate their musical identity from their visual work, Taylor increasingly became known for treating every project as part of a larger artistic vision. Whether directing music videos, choreographing performances, or developing visual concepts, she cultivated a style that was instantly recognizable and deeply personal.
That evolution was reflected in her success at the BET Awards themselves. Taylor won Video Director of the Year in both 2020 and 2023, becoming one of the few artists to receive major recognition not only for performing but also for shaping the visual language of contemporary music.
In 2025, Taylor released Escape Room, an ambitious project that further demonstrated her willingness to experiment creatively. The album earned a Grammy nomination for Best Rap Album earlier this year, reinforcing her ability to move fluidly between genres and expectations.
At the same time, her acting career achieved a major breakthrough. Taylor earned widespread acclaim for her performance as Perfidia Beverly Hills in One Battle After Another, the latest film from director Paul Thomas Anderson. The role ultimately led to an Academy Award nomination, a milestone that positioned Taylor among a small group of artists successfully navigating both the music and film industries at the highest level.
That combination of accomplishments helps explain why BET’s recognition feels particularly timely. Rather than honoring a single achievement, the award acknowledges a career defined by reinvention, ambition, and creative independence.
Over the years, Taylor has repeatedly challenged expectations about what kind of artist she should be. She has moved between performer and director, singer and actress, choreographer and creative executive, often refusing to limit herself to one discipline. In doing so, she has become a model for a younger generation of artists increasingly interested in building careers that extend beyond a single medium.
When the BET Awards air on June 28, Taylor will be recognized not simply for a hit song, a successful album, or a standout performance. The honor reflects the broader cultural footprint she has established over two decades in entertainment.
Hosted by Druski, the 2026 BET Awards will air live from Los Angeles.
