Actor Sam Neill has revealed that he is now cancer-free after nearly five years of treatment for a serious form of blood cancer, marking a significant turning point in a health battle he first made public in 2023.

Speaking in a recent interview with Australia’s 7News, Neill said he had been living with angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma, a rare and aggressive type of blood cancer, since 2022. The diagnosis came while he was promoting Jurassic World Dominion, in which he reprised his iconic role as Dr. Alan Grant from the Jurassic Park series.

Neill described the initial course of treatment as physically taxing but necessary. “I’ve been living with a particular type of lymphoma for about five years, and I was on chemotherapy and the pretty miserable business, but it was keeping me alive,” he said. However, the actor explained that his condition worsened when chemotherapy stopped being effective, leaving him with limited options.

“At one point, I was at a loss, and it looked like I was on the way out,” Neill said, reflecting on the period when standard treatment methods failed to control the disease. He characterized that phase as uncertain and deeply challenging, noting that his prognosis appeared increasingly dire.

The turning point came when Neill underwent CAR T-cell therapy, a newer form of treatment that involves modifying a patient’s own immune cells to better target and destroy cancer. Following the procedure, Neill said recent medical scans have shown no detectable cancer in his body.

“I’ve just had a scan just now, and there is no cancer in my body, that’s an extraordinary thing,” he said. “I’m very, very excited that this can happen.”

Neill is now advocating for broader access to CAR T-cell therapy in Australia, where it is currently limited to clinical trial settings. He has expressed hope that increased availability could benefit other patients facing similar diagnoses, particularly those who do not respond to traditional treatments such as chemotherapy.

The actor’s experience highlights both the challenges of treating rare cancers and the potential of emerging therapies. CAR T-cell therapy, while still relatively new and not widely accessible in all regions, has been increasingly recognized as a promising option for certain blood cancers that prove resistant to standard care.

Neill first disclosed his diagnosis publicly in 2023, explaining that he had initially sought medical attention after noticing swollen glands. At the time, he spoke candidly about confronting mortality, emphasizing both acceptance and a desire to continue living fully.

“I’m not afraid to die, but it would annoy me,” he said in earlier remarks, noting that he hoped to spend more time with his family, including his grandchildren, and to see the continued growth of projects and personal pursuits he had invested in.

Despite the seriousness of his illness, Neill has continued to work intermittently and now appears eager to return more fully to acting. “It’s time I did another movie,” he said, signaling a renewed focus on his career following the positive medical update.
