Kylie Minogue has revealed that she privately faced a second cancer diagnosis in 2021, choosing not to speak publicly about it until now.

The singer shares the news in Kylie, a new Netflix docuseries chronicling her life and career, where she explains that while her first battle with cancer played out in full public view, the second was something she chose to carry quietly while continuing to work. Minogue says she has since recovered.

The revelation adds a previously unknown chapter to one of pop music’s most public health journeys. In 2005, the Australian star announced she had been diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer, forcing her to cancel tour dates and step away from the spotlight for treatment. The diagnosis became international news, with her recovery closely followed by fans and media alike.

In the documentary, Minogue explains that she never felt obligated to immediately disclose what she was going through, particularly because of how emotionally depleted the experience left her. She describes a period where she felt physically and mentally drained, saying there were moments when even leaving the house felt difficult.

By 2023, Minogue was back in full promotional mode for Tension, the album that delivered one of the most successful late-career moments of her catalog thanks to the breakout success of “Padam Padam.” But behind the scenes, she says she was still carrying the emotional weight of her diagnosis and recovery, repeatedly considering whether to talk about it during interviews before deciding against it.

Rather than speaking from a place of obligation, Minogue says she ultimately chose to open up now because she wanted to release that part of the experience and encourage others to stay proactive about their health.

According to the singer, the cancer was caught during a routine checkup, something she credits with making a critical difference in the outcome. While she does not specify what type of cancer she faced in 2021, or whether it was connected to her earlier breast cancer diagnosis, she emphasizes that early detection played an important role in her recovery.

When she revealed her breast cancer diagnosis in 2005, medical professionals in Australia reported a surge in women booking screenings, a phenomenon that became known as the “Kylie effect.” Her experience became one of the most visible celebrity cancer stories of the era, turning her into an unexpected public symbol for awareness and early testing.

The new documentary also revisits some of the difficult decisions surrounding that first diagnosis, including Minogue’s decision at the time to delay chemotherapy while pursuing IVF treatment. She was eventually declared cancer-free in 2008.

Now, years later, the revelation of a second private battle reframes part of her recent career resurgence.

Directed by Michael Harte, the filmmaker behind Still, the Michael J. Fox documentary, Kylie blends archival footage with interviews from people close to the singer, including Dannii Minogue, Jason Donovan, Nick Cave, and longtime collaborators.
