Rihanna has reached a new milestone in recorded music, becoming the first female artist to surpass 200 million single certifications in the United States, according to data from the Recording Industry Association of America. The achievement places her among the most commercially successful artists of all time, despite a prolonged absence from traditional album releases.

Her total now stands at approximately 200.5 million certified units, a figure that reflects combined sales and streaming activity across her catalog. Among all artists, Rihanna ranks third overall, trailing only Drake, who leads with 277.5 million units, and Morgan Wallen, who holds the second position with 215 million.

The RIAA certification system has evolved significantly over the decades, and Rihanna’s milestone underscores the influence of streaming in shaping modern music consumption. Historically, certifications were based solely on physical shipments of singles to retailers. With the rise of digital platforms, the system expanded to include paid downloads, and more recently, streaming has become a central component. Under current standards, 150 on-demand audio or video streams are counted as the equivalent of one digital single sale.

This shift has contributed to the prominence of contemporary artists in certification rankings, as streaming platforms allow songs to accumulate large volumes of plays over time. In Rihanna’s case, the sustained popularity of her catalog has been a key driver of her record-setting total.

Although she has not released a full studio album since Anti in 2016, Rihanna’s earlier hits continue to generate significant engagement. Songs such as “Umbrella”, “We Found Love,” “Don’t Stop the Music,” and “Only Girl (In the World)” remain widely streamed, demonstrating a level of longevity that has enabled her to reach the 200 million mark without relying on recent album cycles.

Her continued visibility, even without new releases, has also contributed to maintaining audience interest. In 2023, Rihanna headlined the Super Bowl halftime show, one of the most-watched musical performances globally, reinforcing her cultural presence. She has also contributed individual songs to major film projects, including “Lift Me Up” for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and “Friends of Mine” for the upcoming Smurfs film, released in 2025.

At the same time, Rihanna has been developing her ninth studio album, a project that has undergone multiple iterations over several years. In interviews, she has described the creative process as deliberate and, at times, uncertain, noting that earlier versions of the record did not align with her artistic direction. While the album was initially described as having reggae influences, she later clarified that it would not be confined to a single genre.

The absence of a recent album has not diminished her commercial standing, as evidenced by the latest certification milestone. Instead, it highlights the enduring appeal of her existing work and the role of streaming in extending the lifecycle of recorded music.

The eventual release of new material could further strengthen her position in the all-time rankings. With Drake and Wallen currently occupying the top two spots, Rihanna remains within reach of becoming the most certified singles artist in RIAA history, should her catalog continue to perform at its current pace or expand with new releases.
