Pete Townshend Strikes New Nine-Figure Deal Covering Name, Image, and Select Music Rights
Pete Townshend is the latest legendary musician to cash in on the booming catalog acquisition market, with new reports indicating that The Who co-founder has signed a major deal with Primary Wave that includes his name, image, likeness, and select music rights.
The agreement is valued in the nine-figure range, making it one of the latest major music-rights acquisitions in an industry where legacy artists are increasingly monetizing their catalogs and personal brands. While exact financial terms have not been disclosed, the deal expands Townshend’s existing business moves after he reportedly sold his publishing catalog and other music interests to Spirit Music in a deal estimated at around $100 million several years ago.
This new agreement appears to focus less on a full catalog transfer and more on the broader commercial power of Townshend’s identity and legacy. Primary Wave will reportedly control aspects of his name, image, and likeness while also acquiring certain music-related rights, creating a partnership designed to expand the commercial use of his work across film, television, branding, and future licensing opportunities.
Townshend, now 80, made it clear that retirement is not part of the plan.
In a statement accompanying the announcement, the rock icon described the partnership as energizing rather than reflective, saying that while many creatives slow down at this stage of life, he remains actively interested in making new work. He praised Primary Wave’s team for bringing both momentum and challenge, two things he suggested continue to fuel his creativity.
That aligns with comments Townshend made last year, when he spoke candidly about his remaining creative ambitions. Rather than viewing this stage of his career as a wind-down, he framed it as a focused final chapter, estimating he may have about a decade left of active creative output. During that period, he said he had remained deeply involved in multiple projects, including theatrical work, visual art, books, and music production. Among the projects he referenced were collaborations tied to Woody Guthrie, work with indie acts, and experimental productions outside the traditional Who ecosystem.
For Primary Wave, the acquisition is another major addition to a rapidly growing empire built around legacy music brands. The company has aggressively expanded its holdings in recent years, acquiring rights connected to some of the biggest names in popular music. Earlier this year, it reportedly secured a major deal involving Britney Spears’ catalog, while previous acquisitions have included a 50 percent stake in the estate of The Notorious B.I.G., as well as agreements tied to the estates of Whitney Houston, Bob Marley, Prince, and Ric Ocasek. Stevie Nicks also sold publishing rights to the company in 2020.
