Rapper Mystikal has been sentenced to 20 years in prison after pleading guilty to a reduced rape charge stemming from a 2022 incident at his Louisiana home.

The artist, whose legal name is Michael Tyler, was sentenced Tuesday in a Louisiana courtroom after reaching a plea agreement with prosecutors ahead of a trial that had been scheduled to begin later this year. The deal allowed Tyler to plead guilty to third-degree rape, avoiding a trial on more serious charges that could have resulted in a mandatory life sentence if he had been convicted.

According to local reports, the victim was present in court and asked the judge to impose the maximum sentence available under the plea agreement. Addressing the court before sentencing, she described the physical and emotional impact of the assault, alleging that Tyler became violent, pulled braids from her hair, struck her, and forcibly raped her. Tyler also addressed the court before the sentence was handed down. According to reports from the hearing, the rapper told the victim, “If I did that to you, I deserve the max sentence.”

The judge subsequently sentenced him to 20 years in prison.

The case dates back to July 2022, when Tyler was arrested following allegations that he sexually assaulted a woman at his home in Prairieville, Louisiana. Prosecutors initially charged him with first-degree rape, simple robbery, domestic-abuse battery, and false imprisonment. Tyler pleaded not guilty at the time and remained jailed as the case moved through the court system.

Investigators alleged that the woman visited Tyler’s residence on the evening of July 30, 2022, to discuss what was described as a financial arrangement between the two. During an August 2022 court hearing, Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Detective Garrett Keith testified that the woman reported a sudden change in Tyler’s behavior after she arrived at the property.

According to Keith’s testimony, the woman alleged that Tyler became violent and prevented her from leaving before sexually assaulting her. Authorities later arrested the rapper, and he was held without bond due in part to his prior criminal history.

For more than two years, Tyler maintained his not guilty plea and appeared prepared to challenge the allegations at trial. However, as jury proceedings approached, negotiations between prosecutors and defense attorneys resulted in a plea agreement that significantly altered the course of the case.

Under the agreement, Tyler pleaded guilty to third-degree rape rather than face trial on the original first-degree rape charge. The resolution reduced his potential legal exposure considerably, as a conviction on the original charge could have resulted in an automatic life sentence under Louisiana law.

Mystikal rose to prominence in the late 1990s and early 2000s as one of the most recognizable artists associated with No Limit Records. Known for hits such as “Shake Ya Ass,” “Danger (Been So Long)” and “Bouncin’ Back (Bumpin’ Me Against the Wall),” he achieved mainstream success during a period when Southern hip-hop was becoming an increasingly dominant force in popular music.

His career was interrupted in 2003 when he was convicted of sexual battery and extortion in connection with the assault of his hairstylist. The conviction resulted in a six-year prison sentence, and Tyler remained incarcerated until his release in 2010.

Years later, he faced another major legal challenge. In 2017, Tyler was arrested and charged in a separate case involving allegations of first-degree rape and second-degree kidnapping. Those charges remained pending for several years before a grand jury ultimately declined to indict him in December 2020 after additional evidence was presented during the investigation.
