Jacob Elordi Withdraws From Cannes Jury Following Foot Injury
Jacob Elordi will no longer serve on the official jury at this year’s Cannes Film Festival after sustaining a foot injury that prevents him from attending the event, according to reports confirmed by festival insiders.
Elordi, who had been in discussions to join the high-profile jury panel for the festival’s 79th edition, was forced to step down in the days leading up to the event. While organizers have not publicly detailed the severity of the injury, sources indicate it would have significantly limited his ability to participate in the physical demands associated with the role.
Serving on the Cannes jury is widely considered one of the most visible and demanding responsibilities in the film world. Jury members are expected not only to screen a packed lineup of competition films but also to attend premieres, press conferences, red carpet appearances, and official events along the Croisette, the iconic seaside promenade that functions as the festival’s central hub. The schedule, often stretching from morning screenings to late-night galas, requires near-constant mobility and public engagement.
This year’s festival is set to run from May 12 through May 23 in Cannes, France, bringing together filmmakers, actors, and industry executives from around the world. The jury will be led by acclaimed South Korean director Park Chan-wook, whose longstanding relationship with the festival includes celebrated entries such as Oldboy, Thirst, and Decision to Leave.
Joining him on the panel is a diverse group of international artists, including Demi Moore, Chloé Zhao, Stellan Skarsgård, Ruth Negga, Belgian filmmaker Laura Wandel, Chilean director Diego Céspedes, Ivorian-American actor Isaach De Bankolé, and Scottish screenwriter Paul Laverty. A replacement for Elordi has not yet been officially announced.
Elordi’s absence comes at a moment when his career continues to accelerate internationally. The Australian actor first gained widespread recognition through The Kissing Booth franchise and later solidified his profile with HBO’s Euphoria, where he plays Nate Jacobs. More recently, he has taken on a range of high-profile film roles that have repositioned him within the industry as a serious dramatic actor.
Earlier this year, Elordi received an Academy Award nomination for his performance in Frankenstein, marking a significant milestone in his transition from teen-focused projects to prestige cinema. He also appeared in Wuthering Heights opposite Margot Robbie, a film that drew considerable attention upon its release in February.
Elordi remains attached to several major productions. He is set to appear in the third season of Euphoria, which is currently airing, and will next be seen in Ridley Scott’s upcoming post-apocalyptic film The Dog Stars. The project is expected to further cement his standing among a new generation of leading actors navigating both commercial and auteur-driven filmmaking.
The Cannes lineup itself remains one of the most anticipated in recent years. Directors competing for the Palme d’Or include Asghar Farhadi, Pedro Almodóvar, Paweł Pawlikowski, Hirokazu Kore-eda, László Nemes, and Ryusuke Hamaguchi, among others.
