J. Cole is weighing in on the aftermath of the high-profile feud between Drake and Kendrick Lamar, describing the public response as overly polarized and, at times, unfairly targeted.
In a clip from an upcoming episode of Cam’ron’s Talk With Flee podcast, Cole addressed how quickly the rivalry escalated beyond music, taking on a broader cultural dynamic. According to him, the reaction from fans and commentators resembled a binary divide, where audiences felt pressured to align themselves with one artist or the other.
“Right away, it became like politics,” Cole said in the interview. “You’re either this or that, you’ve got to pick a side.” He added that he found himself uncomfortable with both extremes, suggesting that the discourse surrounding the feud lost nuance as it intensified.
Cole’s most pointed criticism was directed at what he described as a coordinated effort to undermine Drake’s standing in hip-hop. He argued that the moment became an opportunity for critics to amplify long-held grievances or reassess Drake’s legacy in a negative light.
“It’s disgusting how people tried to use that moment to tear him down,” Cole said, characterizing the backlash as more than organic criticism. He described it as a “campaign,” implying that the narrative surrounding Drake shifted in a way that extended beyond the music itself.
At the same time, Cole acknowledged the impact of Lamar’s output during the feud and its aftermath. Lamar’s releases and public appearances, including a widely discussed series of performances and industry recognition, reinforced his position at the center of the conversation.
Cole did not dispute Lamar’s artistic momentum, noting that his presence in the cultural landscape has only grown stronger. However, he framed his comments as less about choosing sides and more about the broader reaction to the conflict.
Caught between two of the most prominent figures in contemporary hip-hop, Cole has maintained personal and professional relationships with both artists. His own involvement in the situation was brief; he initially entered the conversation with a response track but later withdrew, expressing a desire to step back from the escalating tension.
In the interview, he reiterated that position, emphasizing his discomfort with the way the feud was received rather than the rivalry itself.
Cole also expressed hope that Drake will continue to respond creatively, referencing the rapper’s upcoming project. He suggested that the next phase of Drake’s career could serve as a counterpoint to the criticism that emerged during the feud.
The Drake–Lamar rivalry has been one of the most closely followed conflicts in recent hip-hop, marked by a series of diss tracks and public exchanges that drew widespread attention. Beyond the music, the feud prompted debates about legacy, authenticity, and influence, with fans and industry figures weighing in across platforms.
