Hayden Panettiere is offering a deeply personal look at her years on Nashville, revealing in her upcoming memoir that the experience of starring in the hit drama became increasingly unsettling as elements of her real life appeared to overlap with her character’s storylines.

In This Is Me: A Reckoning, set for release May 19 through Hachette, the actress reflects on some of the most difficult chapters of her life, including postpartum depression, addiction, domestic abuse, and the pressures of growing up in the entertainment industry. Among the most revealing sections is her account of filming Nashville, the musical drama that aired on ABC from 2012 to 2016 before continuing for two additional seasons on CMT.

Panettiere played Juliette Barnes, the fiercely ambitious country-pop star whose complicated personal life often drove some of the show’s most dramatic storylines. The role became one of the defining performances of her career, but behind the scenes, the actress says the experience was far more emotionally isolating than audiences realized.

Writing in the memoir, Panettiere recalls arriving in Nashville expecting a more social and close-knit cast environment, similar to what she had experienced while filming Heroes. Instead, she found herself feeling disconnected from many of her co-stars. “I guess I thought we’d all be friends,” she writes, remembering a conversation with her assistant, Allie, while sitting by the pool at the house she had rented during production.

According to Panettiere, once filming wrapped for the week, cast members largely returned to their own families and personal lives. Connie Britton, who played country superstar Rayna Jaymes, went home to her son. Charles Esten, who portrayed Deacon Claybourne, returned to his wife and children. Panettiere says one of the few exceptions was co-star Jonathan Jackson, who occasionally welcomed her into his family home in Franklin, Tennessee, where she sometimes stayed overnight rather than making the drive back alone.

Without a strong support system among cast members, Panettiere says her social life in Nashville developed through her assistant’s circle of friends, leading to a nightlife routine centered around parties, drinking, and attempts to escape the loneliness she felt during production. “Nashville was a drink all night, crash into bed, then take a nip of the hair-of-the-dog-that-bit-you in the morning kind of place,” she writes.

At the time, she says her relationship with alcohol had not yet become the more serious problem it would later become after the birth of her daughter, Kaya. But the memoir makes clear that the emotional instability of that period was already taking shape.

Panettiere also writes candidly about her frustrations with the creative process behind the show, particularly the frequent script rewrites that are common in television production. She describes receiving scenes one night, only to discover the following day that emotionally significant dialogue had been rewritten or removed.

She specifically points to story decisions surrounding Rayna Jaymes, arguing that attempts to make certain characters more conventionally likable sometimes came at the expense of realism.

Still, Panettiere says those professional frustrations were not what troubled her most. “The bigger issue,” she writes, “was when I realized that my character’s story lines were so similar to what was transpiring in my real life.” At first, she says, she believed the parallels were accidental. “But it soon became clear that my life was being written into the script,” she writes.

The excerpt does not detail specific examples, but the comment is likely to draw attention given Juliette Barnes’ story arcs throughout the series, which include struggles with addiction, emotional breakdowns, relationship turmoil, and postpartum mental health challenges.

Beyond Nashville, This Is Me: A Reckoning covers Panettiere’s childhood in Hollywood, her early acting career in projects including Remember the Titans and A Bug’s Life, her years on Heroes, and her relationship with former heavyweight boxing champion Wladimir Klitschko.
