Foo Fighters Renamed New Album After Title Conflict With ‘Wicked: For Good’
Foo Fighters nearly released their latest album under a different name, but a high-profile film title forced a last-minute rethink. According to frontman Dave Grohl, the band originally intended to call their 12th studio album For Good, before ultimately renaming it Your Favorite Toy to avoid confusion with a major Hollywood release.
In a recent interview with Radio X, Grohl explained that the original title was inspired by lyrics from the album’s lead track, which also initially carried the same name. The phrase “for good,” he said, resonated with him because of its layered meaning, both within the song and as a broader thematic statement for the record.
“I thought it worked on multiple levels,” Grohl said, noting that the line referencing a discarded “favorite toy” suggested permanence, loss, and finality, ideas that could extend to the album as a whole. For a time, the band considered using For Good as both the song title and the album title.
That plan changed after the release of Wicked: For Good, the second installment of director Jon M. Chu’s adaptation of the Broadway musical Wicked. The film, which debuted in late 2025, shares its title with one of the stage production’s most recognizable songs, and quickly established the phrase “For Good” as a prominent part of its branding.
Grohl acknowledged that the overlap made it impractical to move forward with the original title. Rather than risk confusion between the two projects, particularly given the film’s scale and visibility, the band chose to pivot. The track formerly known as “For Good” was retitled “Your Favorite Toy,” which then became the name of the album itself.
Your Favorite Toy, released last month, marks Foo Fighters’ first full-length project since 2023’s But Here We Are. The band introduced the new record earlier this year with the release of its title track, which Grohl has described as central to shaping the album’s overall direction. In a statement issued at the time, he said the song emerged after an extended period of experimentation and ultimately set the tone for the material that followed.
“It was the moment everything clicked,” Grohl said, describing the track as a catalyst for the creative process that led to the finished album. The record continues the band’s longstanding approach of blending high-energy rock with more introspective themes, a balance that has defined much of their recent work.
The release arrives as Foo Fighters prepare for a busy touring schedule. The band is set to perform at major festivals, including Welcome to Rockville in Florida and BottleRock Napa Valley in California, before heading overseas for a series of European dates. A North American run is scheduled to begin in August, with shows planned through the fall.
Meanwhile, the film Wicked: For Good continues to build on the success of its predecessor, which was released in 2024 and introduced audiences to a new cinematic interpretation of the long-running Broadway musical. Directed by Chu and starring Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, the two-part adaptation has drawn significant attention for its scale and musical fidelity.
Chu has previously explained that the decision to use For Good as the subtitle for the second film was rooted in its narrative significance, referencing the song that marks a turning point in the story.
