David Thornton, the husband of Cyndi Lauper, has been named in a civil lawsuit filed in New York that stems from sexual assault allegations against the couple’s son, Declyn Lauper.
The complaint was filed by an anonymous plaintiff, identified as Jane Doe, and relates to an alleged incident that took place in November 2020 at an apartment in Manhattan’s SoHo neighborhood. The same plaintiff previously filed a separate lawsuit directly against Declyn Lauper in 2024 based on the same alleged encounter.
In the new filing, Thornton is accused not of direct involvement in the alleged assault, but of enabling the circumstances under which it allegedly occurred. The lawsuit claims that Thornton provided access to the apartment where the incident took place and failed to take precautions despite allegedly being aware of prior accusations involving his son.
According to the complaint, Doe alleges that she was invited to the apartment by Declyn Lauper and was reimbursed for transportation costs. Once there, the lawsuit states, a disagreement arose regarding a sexual act. Doe claims she expressed discomfort and attempted to leave, at which point the situation escalated.
The filing alleges that Declyn Lauper prevented her from leaving by taking her phone and physically blocking her attempts to exit. The complaint further describes a series of alleged actions in which Doe says she was restrained and assaulted.
The allegations outlined in the lawsuit include claims of physical force, threats, and verbal abuse. Doe also states that following the incident, Declyn Lauper contacted her to apologize and attempted to reach her multiple times afterward.
The case against Thornton centers on the argument that he knowingly allowed access to the property despite being aware of prior allegations involving his son. As part of this claim, the lawsuit references earlier accusations made publicly by a former partner of Declyn Lauper, who alleged incidents of domestic violence and related misconduct in 2018. It is unclear whether those earlier allegations resulted in legal action or formal findings.
The filing also references additional legal issues involving Declyn Lauper in recent years, including a 2022 case in which he pleaded guilty to theft and a separate 2024 case involving gun and drug charges, for which he received probation and was ordered to undergo treatment.
Jane Doe’s earlier lawsuit against Declyn Lauper had been moving toward mediation, but proceedings were delayed after he filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy shortly before a scheduled hearing.
The current lawsuit seeks to establish liability beyond the alleged perpetrator, extending responsibility to a third party based on claims of negligence and prior knowledge. Legal experts note that such claims can be difficult to prove, as they require demonstrating that the defendant had a duty of care and failed to act in a way that could have prevented harm.
Neither Thornton nor his representatives have publicly addressed the allegations as of now. The plaintiff’s legal team has also not issued additional statements beyond the filing.
