A legal dispute between Cher and her son, Elijah Blue Allman, has resurfaced, as Allman formally opposes a renewed effort by the singer to place his finances under court supervision. The case, now back before a Los Angeles probate court, centers on whether Allman is capable of managing his own financial affairs amid allegations involving substance abuse, mental health concerns, and recent criminal charges.

Allman, 49, a guitarist for the band Deadsy and the son of the late Gregg Allman, has retained legal counsel to contest the petition. His attorney, Avi Levy, said in a statement that his client “remains in good spirits” and intends to oppose the conservatorship. Co-counsel Steven Brumer is expected to represent Allman at an upcoming court hearing in Los Angeles.

The latest filing marks a continuation of a legal battle that began in December 2023, when Cher first sought control over her son’s finances. That earlier effort was met with skepticism from the court and ultimately resolved through a private settlement in 2024, during which Allman indicated he would take steps to manage his finances independently, including hiring a business manager. According to Cher’s new petition, those measures were never implemented.

In documents filed with the court, Cher describes her son’s current condition as “dire,” citing what she alleges is a pattern of deteriorating mental health, escalating drug dependency, and financial instability. The petition outlines a series of incidents, including two recent arrests in New Hampshire that resulted in Allman being placed in a psychiatric facility. Cher argues that these developments demonstrate that her son is “gravely disabled” and unable to responsibly handle his financial resources.

According to court filings, Allman was arrested on Feb. 27 at a private school in Concord, New Hampshire, on suspicion of trespassing, criminal threats, and simple assault. Authorities allege he entered the campus under false pretenses, became confrontational, and made physical contact with a student. He was released but arrested again two days later in Windham, New Hampshire, following a reported home break-in. Police responding to the incident found him inside the residence, according to a sworn affidavit.

Cher’s petition also details allegations regarding Allman’s financial behavior. She claims he has been living beyond his means, frequently staying in high-end hotels and short-term rentals he cannot afford. The filing alleges he caused more than $50,000 in damage to one rental property and accumulated significant unpaid debts, including an alleged $18,000 obligation to a drug dealer and more than $200,000 in unpaid taxes.

The documents further state that Allman receives regular payments from a trust established by his father, estimated at $120,000 annually. Cher contends that these funds are quickly depleted, often in connection with substance use. She describes what she characterizes as a recurring pattern in which Allman spends his trust distributions rapidly, leading to hospitalization or other crises.

Additional claims in the filing describe incidents in which Allman allegedly posed a danger to himself or others, including a reported episode in which he lost consciousness in a vehicle in traffic and required medical intervention. The petition also references household accidents, such as grease fires, attributed to impaired awareness.

Supporting Cher’s request is a declaration from Allman’s brother, Devon Allman, who states that he believes Elijah is currently unable to manage his life or finances safely. In his statement, Devon recounts intervening in past situations involving his brother’s debts and expresses concern over his physical and mental condition.

Unlike her previous filing, Cher is not seeking to be appointed as conservator herself. Instead, she has asked the court to designate a licensed private fiduciary, Jason Rubin, to oversee Allman’s financial affairs. Under the proposal, Rubin would control the distribution of trust funds and allocate them toward expenses deemed necessary for Allman’s care and stability.

Allman’s legal team, however, disputes the need for such intervention and maintains that he is capable of managing his own affairs. The court is expected to weigh both sides’ arguments in determining whether a conservatorship is warranted.
