Comedian Carlos Mencia Arrested on 12 Felony Tax Evasion Charges
Comedian Carlos Mencia has been arrested and charged with multiple felony tax-related offenses after Los Angeles County prosecutors alleged that he failed to report millions of dollars in personal and business income over six years.
The charges, announced on Thursday by Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman, accuse Mencia, whose legal name is Ned Arnel Holness, of intentionally failing to file both personal and corporate income tax returns between 2019 and 2024. The comedian, best known for creating and hosting Comedy Central’s Mind of Mencia, now faces 12 felony counts, including six counts related to personal income taxes and six connected to his company, Nedlos Entertainment, Inc.
According to prosecutors, Mencia failed to report approximately $8.7 million in taxable income during the period covered by the investigation. Authorities allege that roughly $3.3 million involved personal earnings, while another $5.4 million was tied to corporate income generated through his entertainment company.
The district attorney’s office claims the alleged omissions resulted in significant unpaid tax obligations to the state of California. Prosecutors estimate Mencia owes more than $300,000 in state taxes, including approximately $267,000 in personal income taxes and more than $35,000 in corporate taxes.
Mencia was taken into custody on Thursday and is expected to be arraigned on June 22. Bail has been set at $250,000. If convicted on all charges, he could face a maximum sentence of 11 years and four months in state prison.
In announcing the case, Hochman pointed to what he described as a deliberate failure to comply with tax laws despite substantial earnings. The district attorney argued that individuals with significant income have the same legal obligations as ordinary taxpayers and said the prosecution reflects a broader effort to pursue financial crimes involving unpaid taxes.
“Mr. Mencia has an income most people can only dream of, and like everyone else, he is required to file his personal and corporate tax returns and pay his fair share,” Hochman said in a statement. He added that failing to report millions of dollars in income undermines public trust and places an unfair burden on taxpayers who consistently meet their obligations.
The case marks a significant legal challenge for Mencia, who rose to prominence in the early 2000s through stand-up comedy and his Comedy Central series Mind of Mencia. The show became one of the network’s most recognizable programs during its run, helping establish Mencia as a major comedy figure at the time. He later continued touring as a stand-up comedian while making various television and podcast appearances.
The charges do not involve allegations of fraud beyond the alleged failure to file required tax returns, and prosecutors have not accused Mencia of concealing assets or engaging in other financial schemes. Instead, the case centers on allegations that he intentionally failed to submit tax filings despite earning substantial income through his personal work and business operations.
The prosecution comes amid increased scrutiny of tax enforcement efforts in California and Los Angeles County, where officials have signaled a willingness to pursue high-profile cases involving unpaid taxes and alleged financial misconduct. For Mencia, the case represents one of the most serious legal challenges of his career and could carry significant financial and personal consequences depending on the outcome of the proceedings.
Mencia has not publicly commented on the charges, and it remains unclear how he intends to plead when he appears in court later this month.
