Cardi B is set to take on a civic-facing role as part of a new public campaign tied to New York City’s early childhood education expansion. The rapper will serve as a judge in a citywide jingle competition promoting a new childcare initiative led by Zohran Mamdani, aimed at providing free education for two-year-olds.

The program, referred to as “2-K,” is designed as an extension of the city’s existing pre-kindergarten and 3-K offerings. It represents an effort to broaden access to early childcare services, particularly in neighborhoods where affordability and availability have historically been limited.

As part of the rollout, city officials have launched a public contest inviting residents to create short promotional jingles highlighting the initiative. Participants are asked to submit either 15 or 30-second audio clips through an official city platform and share them on social media using designated tags. Submissions are open through mid-April, after which a group of finalists will be selected.

Cardi B will review entries and narrow the field to five finalists. The final decision will then be opened to public voting, allowing New Yorkers to choose the winning submission. The format reflects a broader strategy to engage residents directly in public messaging while leveraging the visibility of a high-profile figure with strong ties to the city.

In promotional material released alongside the contest, Cardi B emphasized the practical importance of accessible childcare, particularly for working families. She noted that a lack of support systems can limit opportunities, especially for women balancing employment and caregiving responsibilities.

The initial phase of the 2-K program will launch in select areas, including parts of the Bronx, Upper Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Queens. These neighborhoods were chosen based on a combination of demographic factors and existing infrastructure, and they also align with communities that have cultural and personal significance for Cardi B, who was born and raised in the Bronx.

City officials estimate that approximately 2,000 children will be eligible for the first round of placements. Enrollment is expected to open in early June, with families receiving placement decisions later in the summer. The program is scheduled to begin in September.

According to city leadership, the long-term goal is to expand access beyond the initial rollout and establish a universal childcare system available regardless of income level, immigration status, or geographic location within the city. The initiative has been framed as both an educational investment and an economic support measure for families facing rising living costs.

Kamar Samuels, the city’s schools chancellor, said the program is intended to strengthen early developmental outcomes while also providing stability for parents. He described access to childcare at this stage as critical for language acquisition, social development, and long-term learning.

For Cardi B, the collaboration marks another instance of her involvement in civic or political initiatives connected to her hometown. While primarily known for her music career, she has periodically used her platform to comment on public policy and social issues, particularly those affecting urban communities.

As the city moves toward a wider implementation of 2-K, officials are positioning the initiative as part of a larger effort to build a more comprehensive early childhood education system.

Further details on expansion timelines have not yet been announced.
