Busta Rhymes has reached a private settlement with a former assistant who accused him of assault, resolving a legal battle that also included a counterclaim for defamation.

The agreement was disclosed in a letter filed in federal court this week, where attorneys for both sides said the matter had been settled through mediation. According to the filing, the parties are finalizing the terms and expect to complete the process within 10 days. A judge has instructed them to submit a formal motion confirming the settlement by June 1.

The case originated from an incident in 2023 inside the lobby of the rapper’s Brooklyn apartment building. The former assistant, Dashiel Gables, alleged that Smith, the Grammy-nominated artist’s legal name is Trevor Smith Jr., punched him in the face during a confrontation.

In his lawsuit, Gables claimed the dispute began over a delayed food order, specifically a pan of chicken, and escalated further when he answered a phone call from his young daughter. Gables stated that this violated a workplace rule prohibiting cellphone use while on the job, which allegedly triggered Smith’s reaction.

The former assistant filed suit in federal court in August, accusing Smith of assault and battery and citing the Fair Labor Standards Act as part of broader claims related to workplace conditions. He also alleged that the incident had long-term professional consequences, claiming he was effectively shut out of opportunities in the music industry after the altercation.

Smith denied the allegations and responded with a counterclaim in October, accusing Gables of defamation. In that filing, he argued that the assistant’s accusations were false and had caused reputational damage, including financial losses and harm to business relationships.

The dispute unfolded alongside a separate criminal matter tied to the same incident. Smith, 53, was arrested at the time and issued a desk appearance ticket on a charge of third-degree assault, a misdemeanor. A spokesperson for the Brooklyn District Attorney’s Office has since said the outcome of that case has been sealed, and no additional details have been released.

The civil case brought two competing narratives into court filings: Gables’ account of an unprovoked assault tied to workplace conditions, and Smith’s claim that the accusations themselves were damaging and untrue. The decision to resolve the case through private mediation avoids a trial that would have required both sides to present evidence and testimony in open court.

No details about the agreement have been made public, including any admission of wrongdoing by either party or whether it involves financial compensation.
