Bonnie Tyler Recovering After Emergency Surgery in Portugal
Bonnie Tyler is recovering after undergoing emergency intestinal surgery in Portugal, according to a statement released through her official website on Wednesday.
The singer, best known for hits including Total Eclipse of the Heart and Holding Out for a Hero, was admitted to a hospital in Faro, where she owns a home. Representatives said the procedure was successful and that Tyler is now recuperating.
“We are very sorry to announce that Bonnie has been admitted to the hospital in Faro, Portugal, where she has a home, for emergency intestinal surgery,” the statement read. “The surgery went well, and she is now recuperating.” No additional details about the nature of the medical issue were disclosed.
The health update comes just weeks before the start of a scheduled European tour run. Tyler currently has concert dates booked beginning May 22, with performances planned throughout the remainder of the year. It remains unclear whether any of those appearances will be postponed as a result of the surgery.
Only two months ago, Tyler spoke positively about her health and her ability to continue touring. In an interview with Hello! Magazine earlier this year, the singer said she still felt strong onstage despite some minor physical issues.
“I’m fit enough at the moment, touch wood, and I’m really enjoying doing the shows,” she said. “I’m still rocking on that stage with my wonderful band.” At the time, Tyler mentioned knee pain as her primary complaint but otherwise described herself as being in good condition.
Now 74, Tyler remains one of the most recognizable voices to emerge from the pop-rock boom of the late 1970s and 1980s. Her career officially reaches the 50-year mark this year, dating back to the release of her debut single, “My! My! Honeycomb,” in 1976.
Although the song received limited attention commercially, Tyler broke through internationally the following year with “It’s a Heartache,” which became a major hit in both the United Kingdom and the United States. The track helped establish her signature vocal style.
Her biggest commercial success arrived in 1983 with “Total Eclipse of the Heart,” written and produced by songwriter Jim Steinman. The song topped charts around the world and became one of the defining power ballads of its era. The recording featured contributions from several notable musicians, including guitarist Rick Derringer and members of Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band. Its dramatic production and gothic-style music video helped cement Tyler’s place in the MTV generation.
In recent years, Tyler has continued performing extensively across Europe, where she maintains a strong touring audience decades after her commercial peak. She has also remained open about the demands of maintaining a live career later in life, often speaking about the importance of protecting her health and voice while staying active professionally.
Tyler previously reflected on the enduring popularity of “Total Eclipse of the Heart” in a 2023 interview, recalling that Steinman originally envisioned the song as part of a musical adaptation of Nosferatu before reworking it into the final version that became a worldwide hit.
