Veteran character actor James Handy, whose career spanned more than four decades across film and television, has died after being fatally stabbed at his Los Angeles-area home. He was 81 years old.

Authorities have arrested a suspect in connection with the killing, identifying him as Michael Gledhill, the 44-year-old son of Handy’s longtime girlfriend. The Los Angeles Police Department confirmed the arrest and said the investigation remains ongoing.

Handy’s death was also confirmed by his representative. In a statement, his talent agent, Pam Ellis-Evenas, expressed sorrow over the loss and confirmed that the victim in the Tarzana homicide was the veteran actor known for his extensive work in Hollywood.

According to police, officers responded to a call in the Tarzana neighborhood on Wednesday morning at approximately 9:30 a.m. after receiving a disturbing 911 report. Authorities said the caller made statements indicating involvement in a homicide before officers were dispatched to the scene.

When police arrived, they discovered Handy in the front yard of the residence suffering from a stab wound to the chest. Emergency personnel transported him to a nearby hospital, but despite lifesaving efforts, he was later pronounced dead.

Investigators said the suspect remained at the scene and approached responding officers shortly after their arrival. According to the LAPD, the man identified himself to police and indicated that he was the individual they were seeking. Authorities later confirmed the suspect was Michael Gledhill, who lived at the residence with his mother, identified as Handy’s girlfriend.

Law enforcement officials described the incident as an isolated domestic matter and emphasized that investigators do not believe there is any ongoing threat to the community. Gledhill was taken into custody without incident and booked on suspicion of murder. His bail was set at $2 million.

The tragedy marks the sudden end of a long and respected career for Handy, who built a reputation as one of Hollywood’s most dependable character actors. While rarely the star of a production, he became a familiar face to generations of moviegoers and television audiences through dozens of memorable supporting roles.

Among his best-known film appearances was a role in the 1995 family adventure hit Jumanji, starring Robin Williams. More recently, he appeared in the blockbuster sequel Top Gun: Maverick, which became one of the biggest box-office successes of the decade. In the film, Handy portrayed a bartender, adding another credit to a résumé that stretched across nearly every corner of the entertainment industry.

His film work also included appearances in Arachnophobia and The Rocketeer, two films that have since earned enduring popularity among audiences. Throughout his career, Handy often specialized in portraying authority figures, working-class characters, and everyday people, bringing authenticity and warmth to even brief screen appearances.

Television viewers likewise encountered Handy in numerous hit series over the years. His credits included appearances on NYPD Blue, Beverly Hills, 90210, Law & Order, and The Young and the Restless. His versatility allowed him to move seamlessly between drama, crime procedurals, soap operas, and feature films, making him one of the industry's most recognizable supporting performers.

Though he rarely sought the spotlight, Handy earned the respect of colleagues and casting directors through his consistency, professionalism, and ability to elevate scenes regardless of the size of the role. Over the course of his career, he accumulated an extensive list of credits that reflected both his longevity and his adaptability in an industry that often changes rapidly.

As investigators continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident, tributes from colleagues and fans have begun to emerge, remembering Handy not only for his decades of work on screen but also for the lasting impression he left on those who worked alongside him.
