Universal Pictures will release a fourth installment of The Mummy in May 2028, with Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz reprising their roles as Rick and Evelyn O’Connell. The film continues the franchise’s original storyline more than two decades after it was relaunched.
The project reunites the central pairing that defined the 1999 relaunch and its 2001 sequel, The Mummy Returns, two films that repositioned Universal’s classic monster property as a modern action-adventure series. While Fraser continued with 2008’s The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, Weisz did not appear in that installment, which shifted the setting. This chapter restores the dynamic that anchored the franchise’s original run.
The film will be directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, the filmmaking duo known as Radio Silence, from a screenplay by David Coggeshall. Sean Daniel, who has produced the franchise since its 1999 revival, returns alongside Project X Entertainment. Fraser will also serve as an executive producer. Universal had previously reserved the May 2028 window for a major event release, and no other wide entries are currently scheduled for that weekend.
When The Mummy relaunched in 1999, it did more than revisit a 1930s monster title. It reframed the property as a large-scale adventure romance, blending supernatural mythology with fast-paced action and comedic timing. The film and its sequel generated approximately $1.8 billion globally across the franchise and helped establish Fraser as a leading action star at the height of his career, while positioning Weisz as the intellectual and emotional center of the narrative.
Universal later attempted to reboot the property with 2017’s The Mummy, starring Tom Cruise, a project designed to launch an interconnected Dark Universe built around the studio’s classic monster characters. That initiative stalled after its initial release, and the studio did not proceed with the broader shared-universe plan.
Fraser has spoken publicly for years about wanting to revisit the role under different circumstances. In an interview with the Associated Press in November, he said the installment he had hoped to make was “forthcoming,” adding that the sequel he envisioned had “never been made.” He has also indicated that the direction of the third film did not fully align with his expectations for the character.
The film is scheduled for wide theatrical release on May 19, 2028. No official title or plot details have been announced.
