The final chapter of The Boys will extend beyond streaming, with its series finale scheduled to screen in movie theaters using 4DX technology, an immersive format designed to synchronize motion, vibration, and environmental effects with what’s happening on screen.

The finale, which marks the end of the show’s fifth and final season, will debut on Amazon Prime Video later this month, but fans will also have the option to experience it in select theaters on May 19 at 9:30 p.m. local time. The announcement was made via the show’s official social media accounts, which emphasized the heightened sensory aspect of the screenings.

A spokesperson for Amazon MGM Studios confirmed that additional details about participating theaters and ticketing will be released in coordination with 4DX exhibitors.

The move places The Boys among a growing number of high-profile streaming series that are experimenting with theatrical releases for major episodes or finales. In recent years, platforms have increasingly turned to cinemas to create event-style viewings, blurring the line between traditional television and theatrical exhibition. Similar strategies have been used by Netflix and HBO Max, which have organized limited theatrical runs for select series finales and milestone episodes.

Originally debuting in 2019, The Boys quickly established itself as one of Amazon’s flagship series. Created by Eric Kripke and developed with Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, the show is based on the comic book series by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson. It offers a satirical take on the superhero genre, focusing on a group of vigilantes attempting to expose and dismantle a corrupt system of corporate-backed superheroes.

Over the course of its run, the series has built a reputation for its graphic storytelling, political undertones, and commentary on celebrity culture and power structures. It has also performed strongly in terms of viewership, becoming one of the most-watched titles on Prime Video and earning critical recognition, including an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Drama Series.

The show’s ensemble cast includes Karl Urban, Jack Quaid, Antony Starr, Erin Moriarty, and Chace Crawford, among others. The series has also featured notable appearances from actors such as Jensen Ackles and Jeffrey Dean Morgan in later seasons.

In addition to its main storyline, The Boys has expanded into a broader franchise with multiple spinoffs. These include the animated anthology The Boys Presents: Diabolical, the now-canceled live-action series Gen V, and the upcoming prequel project Vought Rising. Together, these extensions have helped solidify the series as a central property within Amazon’s original programming slate.

The decision to present the finale in 4DX reflects an effort to transform the episode into a communal viewing experience, offering audiences a more cinematic and interactive way to engage with the conclusion. While 4DX screenings have traditionally been reserved for action-heavy feature films, their application to a television finale signals a broader shift in how studios are packaging major streaming events.

Production on the series is handled by Sony Pictures Television in collaboration with Amazon MGM Studios, along with Kripke Enterprises, Original Film, and Point Grey Pictures.
