The B-52s were forced to cancel their scheduled performance at the Retro C Trop Music Festival in Tilloloy, France, just minutes before a violent storm ripped through the venue Saturday, destroying portions of the band's equipment in the process.

In a statement posted to Facebook, the band apologized to fans who had come out to the Château de Tilloloy, explaining that the storm made continuing the show impossible and that the safety of fans and crew had to take priority. They thanked their touring crew for working to keep everyone as safe as possible amid what they described as an extremely dangerous situation, and expressed hope that everyone made it home safely afterward.

Festival organizers, who characterized the storm as a tornado, subsequently announced the cancellation of the event's entire final day on Sunday following the previous night's evacuation. In a statement posted in French and later translated, organizers said they deeply regretted having to cancel the 2026 edition's closing day, citing the tornado that struck late Saturday night and destroyed all public reception facilities on site. They reiterated that the safety of attendees, performers, staff, and other stakeholders remained their top concern, framing the cancellation as an unavoidable decision given the severity of the weather and its impact on festival infrastructure. Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, along with the band Europe, had been among the acts scheduled to perform that day.

According to Schneider, B-52s’ frontman, lightning had already begun before the storm fully hit, yet the promoter still had crew members setting up the stage and instructed the band to prepare to perform. He said it was only because their tour manager pushed back, insisting it wasn't safe to proceed until they understood what the storm was doing, that the band avoided taking the stage during the most dangerous window. Conditions then deteriorated rapidly, with what Schneider described as hurricane-force winds and heavy rain arriving suddenly, scattering much of the crew to find whatever shelter they could find nearby. The festival grounds were evacuated, but even leaving wasn't immediately possible, as driving conditions had become too hazardous. Power backstage reportedly cut out multiple times during the chaos.

Schneider also expressed particular sympathy for fans who had spent the day waiting in extreme heat only to receive little to no warning once conditions turned dangerous, noting that lightning had struck near the stage area shortly before their set was due to begin. He also detailed significant equipment damage, saying scaffolding collapsed from the stage and destroyed keyboards, microphone stands, laptops, and sound gear. The band's mascot figure, Claudia, reportedly fell from the stage after its side and back curtains were torn away by the wind. Schneider said he still didn't have a full accounting of the damage at the time of his post, but emphasized with relief that no one had been injured. The festival did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The incident unfolded against the backdrop of a record-breaking heatwave gripping France and much of Europe, which Reuters reported has contributed to roughly 1,000 excess deaths nationwide, with officials warning that figure is likely to climb further. The storms that swept through parts of France Saturday, including the northern region surrounding Tilloloy, brought a temporary break in the heat but also knocked out power for thousands of households.
