A new film adaptation of Yasmina Reza’s acclaimed stage play Art is moving forward with a high-profile cast and creative team, bringing together Ralph Fiennes, Colin Farrell, and Wagner Moura in leading roles. The project will be directed by Fernando Meirelles, whose previous work includes internationally recognized films such as City of God and The Constant Gardener.

The film, currently titled Art, is based on Reza’s Tony Award-winning play, first staged in Paris in 1994. The story centers on three longtime friends whose relationship begins to unravel after one of them purchases an expensive, minimalist white painting. What initially appears to be a trivial disagreement over taste escalates into a broader examination of ego, values, and unresolved tensions within the group.

In the upcoming adaptation, Fiennes, Farrell, and Moura are expected to portray the three central characters, though specific casting assignments have not yet been publicly detailed. The dynamic among the trio forms the backbone of the narrative, as their clashing perspectives on art serve as a catalyst for deeper conflicts about identity, status, and friendship.

The screenplay is being written by Christopher Hampton, a two-time Academy Award winner known for his work on Dangerous Liaisons and The Father. Hampton’s involvement represents a return to material he has long been associated with; he previously translated Reza’s original French-language play into English for its West End debut in 1996. That production, directed by Matthew Warchus, contributed to the play’s international success and helped establish it as a modern classic.

The film is being produced by Charles Finch and Tracy Seaward, both of whom bring extensive experience in character-driven storytelling. Financing and international sales are being handled in part by 193, a production company backed by Legendary, with the project set to be introduced to buyers at the Cannes Film Market. U.S. distribution rights are being represented by Creative Artists Agency.

Meirelles’ involvement signals a potentially distinct tonal approach to the material. While the original play is often staged as a tightly contained chamber piece, the director’s filmography suggests an interest in expanding narratives beyond confined settings while maintaining emotional intensity. His previous work, including The Two Popes, has demonstrated an ability to balance dialogue-driven storytelling with cinematic scale.

Since its debut, Art has been widely performed around the world and translated into multiple languages. It has also seen several high-profile revivals, including a recent Broadway production in 2025 featuring a cast led by Bobby Cannavale, James Corden, and Neil Patrick Harris. The play’s enduring appeal lies in its sharp dialogue and its exploration of how seemingly minor disagreements can expose deeper fractures in personal relationships.

The decision to adapt Art into a feature film comes at a time of renewed interest in stage-to-screen adaptations, particularly those centered on dialogue and performance. The film also adds to a growing slate of projects associated with 193, which has recently attached itself to other high-profile productions, including an upcoming Western directed by Park Chan-wook.
