Perry Farrell has issued a public apology for the onstage altercation that effectively ended Jane’s Addiction’s reunion, addressing both his bandmates and fans more than a year after the incident occurred.

In a statement posted to Instagram on Wednesday, Farrell acknowledged responsibility for the confrontation that erupted during a Jane’s Addiction performance in Boston in September 2024, a moment that led to the immediate cancellation of the band’s reunion tour and, ultimately, the group’s dissolution.

“I’ve reflected on it and know I didn’t handle myself the way I should have,” Farrell wrote. “I apologize to our patrons and my bandmates for losing my temper and for disrupting the show.”

The statement, which was also shared on Jane’s Addiction’s official account, marks Farrell’s most direct and conciliatory response to the incident to date. While Farrell has previously addressed the dispute in legal filings, Wednesday’s message is framed as a personal apology rather than a legal defense.

“Jane’s Addiction has been at the center of my life for decades,” Farrell continued. “The band, the songs, the patrons, and the impact that we’ve had on music and culture mean more to me than any words I could ever possibly write down.”

Farrell added that his intention has always been to deliver performances that are “real, honest and positive,” conceding that the Boston show failed to meet that standard. “In Boston, we fell short of that, and I’m truly sorry to everyone who was impacted,” he wrote, concluding by thanking fans for their continued support.

The apology arrives amid ongoing legal tensions between Farrell and the remaining members of Jane’s Addiction. Earlier this year, guitarist Dave Navarro, bassist Eric Avery, and drummer Stephen Perkins filed a lawsuit against Farrell, accusing him of assault, battery, negligence, intentional infliction of emotional distress, breach of fiduciary duty, and breach of contract. The complaint alleges that the onstage confrontation caused the band to lose more than $10 million in projected revenue due to the tour’s cancellation and the abrupt end of all band activity.

According to the lawsuit, the altercation escalated after simmering tensions between Farrell and Navarro reached a breaking point during the Boston performance. While detailed accounts of the incident have largely remained confined to court filings, the fallout was immediate: the band canceled the remainder of its tour and later confirmed that Jane’s Addiction would no longer continue as a functioning group.

Farrell responded to the lawsuit in September by filing a list of 35 affirmative defenses, including claims that Navarro acted with “unclean hands” and that the plaintiffs failed to mitigate their alleged damages. He has not publicly addressed the specifics of the legal claims in detail outside of those filings.

The remaining band members have also largely avoided public comment, though Navarro spoke candidly about the situation in a May interview with Guitar Player. Reflecting on the incident, Navarro said the confrontation “forever destroyed the band’s life” and made clear that reconciliation was no longer possible. “There’s no chance for the band to ever play together again,” he said.

Jane’s Addiction, formed in Los Angeles in the mid-1980s, has long been regarded as one of the most influential alternative rock bands of its era, credited with helping bridge the gap between underground rock and mainstream success. Their turbulent history has included multiple breakups, reunions, and lineup changes over the decades, though few episodes have had consequences as final as the events surrounding the 2024 tour.

Farrell’s apology does not directly address the lawsuit or suggest any resolution to the ongoing legal dispute. Still, it represents a rare moment of public reflection from the singer, who has often been described as both the band’s creative driving force and its most volatile presence.

Whether the statement has any bearing on the legal proceedings remains to be seen.
