Pearl Jam guitarist Mike McCready is finally ready to release a project he has quietly been building for more than two decades. The musician announced Farewell to Seasons, a graphic novel paired with a companion rock opera inspired by the rise and emotional fallout of Seattle’s early-1990s grunge scene.

The book, created with writer Mark Sable and illustrator Sebastian Piraz, tells the story of a fictional musician named David Williams navigating a version of Seattle that closely mirrors the scene McCready himself came up in. Rather than a straightforward retelling of real events, the story blends reality with fantasy elements, using fictional characters to explore the pressures, creativity, and instability that defined the era.

McCready described the project as something he had been slowly shaping for years, drawing directly from the atmosphere of the Seattle music community that helped launch bands like Pearl Jam, Nirvana, and Soundgarden.

“It’s a story I’ve been developing for many years,” McCready said in a statement announcing the project. “It was inspired by the creativity, community, and chaos of the Seattle music scene.”

Alongside the graphic novel, McCready also created what he describes as a “lost” rock opera connected to the story. The music is written from the perspective of the book’s main character, giving the fictional narrative another dimension beyond the page. The idea reflects McCready’s long interest in storytelling beyond traditional albums, using music as part of a larger narrative rather than a standalone release.

According to the publisher, the story does not shy away from the darker aspects of the grunge explosion. Themes of self-doubt, addiction, ambition, and artistic pressure run throughout the narrative. Visual elements reportedly use surreal imagery to represent the emotional highs and lows experienced by young musicians trying to find their place during a chaotic time in music history.

McCready has had time to focus on finishing the project during a quieter period for Pearl Jam. The band recently paused activity following the departure of longtime drummer Matt Cameron, who had been with the group for more than 25 years. While the split was described as amicable, the change marked the end of one of the band’s longest-standing lineups.

Frontman Eddie Vedder recently said the band is still working together but isn’t ready to publicly discuss future plans or lineup decisions. He suggested any updates would come from the group collectively rather than from individual members.

Despite the uncertainty, Vedder made it clear that the band is still active creatively.

“We’re working on things and we’re excited,” he said in a recent interview, adding that change can sometimes be healthy for a band that has been together as long as Pearl Jam.

The project also reflects a growing trend of musicians turning to graphic novels as another creative outlet. In recent years, more artists have used the format to expand their storytelling beyond music, often blending visuals, narrative, and original songs into one larger concept.

Farewell to Seasons is currently available for preorder through Z2 Comics and is scheduled for wide release on October 7.
