Nicki Minaj Explains Her Public Support for Trump, Criticizes Democrats and Jay-Z in New Interview
Nicki Minaj is speaking at length about her political views and the reasons behind her increasing public support for Donald Trump, offering a mix of personal grievances, criticism of Democratic leadership, and frustration with what she describes as ideological pressure within the music industry.
In a new interview, Minaj said her political shift was shaped in part by repeated “swatting” incidents at her home, during which false emergency reports allegedly triggered aggressive police responses. According to the rapper, those incidents left her deeply frustrated with California leadership after she says an attempt to connect with Governor Gavin Newsom went unanswered.
Minaj framed that experience as a turning point, saying she felt ignored despite being a high-profile California taxpayer and describing the lack of response as something that fundamentally changed how she viewed Democratic politicians. She contrasted that experience with what she described as a far more receptive response from Republican Congresswoman Anna Paulina Luna, who reportedly offered assistance in 2025.
According to Minaj, that interaction reinforced political views she says she had already privately held, but had avoided expressing publicly.
The rapper acknowledged that part of her hesitation came from concern over how such a move would be received within the entertainment industry, which she characterized as politically uniform and culturally hostile to open Republican support. She suggested there is an unspoken expectation within music circles to align publicly with Democratic politics, particularly among major artists.
Minaj said she feared publicly backing Trump would alienate portions of her audience, but eventually decided she no longer wanted to conceal her views. Her criticism extended beyond Democratic politicians and into the music industry itself, with Jay-Z unexpectedly emerging as part of the conversation.
Minaj argued that Jay-Z’s close public relationship with former President Barack Obama may have had unintended political consequences, suggesting some figures in hip-hop privately resented Jay-Z’s position but were unwilling to say so publicly. She did not elaborate extensively on that claim, but framed it as part of a broader dissatisfaction within rap culture that she believes has remained largely unspoken.
She also pointed to a 2024 speech Obama delivered while campaigning for Kamala Harris, specifically referencing remarks directed at Black male voters. According to Minaj, reactions she saw online suggested many Black men felt dismissed rather than heard, and she said that response further pushed her away from the Democratic Party.
The comments place Minaj more firmly in overt political territory than she has traditionally occupied, even though her political statements have occasionally generated headlines in recent years.
