Lizzo spoke candidly about her personal life in a recent podcast appearance, sharing that she chose to remain a virgin until reaching a major career milestone early in her music career.
During a conversation on the Friends Keep Secrets podcast, hosted by Benny Blanco, Lil Dicky, and Kristin Batalucco, the Grammy-winning artist said she made a deliberate decision when she was younger to wait until she had won a Grammy Award before becoming sexually active.
“I was a late bloomer,” Lizzo said, noting that she had not always been open about that part of her life. She added that she had previously misrepresented her experience in social situations, particularly during her college years, due to embarrassment and social pressure.
Lizzo explained that the turning point came in 2020, when she won three awards at the Grammy Awards. That night marked a breakthrough moment in her career, as she received Best Pop Solo Performance for “Truth Hurts,” Best Urban Contemporary Album for Cuz I Love You (Deluxe), and Best Traditional R&B Performance for “Jerome.”
According to Lizzo, the personal milestone followed shortly after that professional achievement, though not on the same night. She said the decision was not something she had been actively planning in that moment, but rather the result of a long-standing promise to herself.
The artist also spoke about earlier experiences that shaped her perspective on relationships and intimacy. She said she did not have her first kiss until she was 21, attributing that in part to religious influences during her upbringing. As a teenager, she participated in a church-based commitment to abstain from physical relationships before marriage, which contributed to her hesitation.
At the same time, Lizzo described feeling out of step with her peers during those years, saying she often felt pressure to present herself differently. She recalled specific instances where she claimed to have more experience than she actually did in order to fit in socially.
Looking back, Lizzo framed the experience as something she now feels comfortable discussing openly. She said that sharing the truth has lifted a sense of pressure she previously carried, particularly after years of keeping that aspect of her life private.
The discussion reflects a broader pattern in Lizzo’s public persona, which has often included candid conversations about body image, confidence, and personal growth. Over the course of her career, she has positioned herself as an advocate for self-acceptance, frequently addressing topics that intersect with identity and societal expectations.
The interview comes as Lizzo continues to re-engage with her music career following a quieter period in 2024, which she has described as a “gap year.” Her most recent album, Love in Real Life, was released last year, marking her return to recording after a period of reduced public activity.
