Liam Payne’s Son Bear Named Sole Beneficiary of Singer’s Estate Following Intestacy Ruling
Liam Payne’s son, Bear, has been named the sole beneficiary of the former One Direction singer’s estate, according to newly released probate documents, bringing greater clarity to the future of Payne’s assets nearly two years after his death.
The documents show that Bear, now 9 years old, will inherit the entirety of his father’s estate, which is valued at approximately $29 million after liabilities and expenses are taken into account. Payne died in October 2024 without leaving a will, meaning the distribution of his assets has been governed by U.K. intestacy laws rather than personal instructions left by the singer.
Under British law, when an individual dies without a valid will, their estate is distributed according to a legal hierarchy of relatives. Because Payne was not married at the time of his death, his child became the primary beneficiary of the estate.
Administration of Payne’s assets was granted to his former partner, Cheryl, and music lawyer Richard Bray in 2025. Their role is to oversee the management and distribution of the estate in accordance with U.K. law. Probate records previously indicated that the gross value of Payne’s estate exceeded £28 million, with the net value reduced after debts, taxes, and administrative expenses were accounted for.
While Bear has inherited the estate, he will not immediately gain direct control over the assets. Because he is a minor, much of the inheritance is expected to remain protected within a trust structure until he reaches adulthood. Such arrangements are common in cases involving underage beneficiaries and are designed to preserve assets until the child is legally able to manage them independently.
The ruling places renewed attention on Payne’s relationship with Bear, whom he frequently described as the most important part of his life. The singer welcomed his son in March 2017 with Girls Aloud star Cheryl after the pair began dating in 2016. At the time of Bear’s birth, Payne publicly expressed his excitement about becoming a father, sharing a photograph of himself holding his newborn son and describing the moment as one of the happiest experiences of his life.
Throughout the years that followed, Payne generally kept Bear out of the public spotlight, though he occasionally spoke about fatherhood in interviews and on social media. Friends and colleagues often described his son as a central focus of his personal life, even as his career continued to evolve following One Direction’s hiatus.
The estate decision comes against the backdrop of the tragedy that shocked fans around the world in October 2024. Payne died at the age of 31 after falling from a hotel balcony in Buenos Aires, Argentina. News of his death sparked an outpouring of grief from fans, fellow musicians, and former collaborators, many of whom had followed his career since One Direction emerged from The X Factor in 2010.
