Jim Carrey was in Paris last week to receive an Honorary César at France’s annual César Awards ceremony and, despite widespread online speculation, he was physically present at the event.

The veteran comedian and actor accepted the lifetime honor in person, delivering his speech in French. The moment, intended as a tribute to his decades-long career in film, quickly became overshadowed by social media claims that the man onstage was not Carrey at all, but an impersonator, a body double, or even a hyper-realistic transformation by a drag performer.

While Carrey is known for his eccentric humor and infrequent public appearances, the conspiracy theories gained enough traction that both his publicist and a representative for the César Awards issued statements to put the matter to rest.

Marleah Leslie, Carrey’s longtime publicist, told Rolling Stone: “Jim Carrey attended the Cesar Awards, where he accepted his Honorary Cesar Award.”

Gregory Caulier, general delegate of the César Awards, described the speculation as a “non-issue” in comments to Variety and called Carrey’s appearance “a historic moment.” According to Caulier, Carrey had planned to attend the ceremony since the summer and had been deeply moved by the Academy’s invitation.

Caulier said the actor worked on his French-language speech for months, asking for guidance on pronunciation and delivery. He also confirmed that Carrey traveled to Paris accompanied by his partner, his daughter, his grandson, and a group of close friends and family members. His longtime publicist was also present. Among those in attendance was filmmaker Michel Gondry, who previously collaborated with Carrey on Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and other projects.

Online rumors began circulating after clips and images from the ceremony were shared on social media. Some users questioned Carrey’s appearance, while others referenced an old interview clip in which he said, “I don’t exist”, a philosophical comment made in the context of discussing identity, fame, and performance. That clip resurfaced and was used by some accounts to fuel unfounded claims that his appearance at the awards was staged or fabricated.

The speculation escalated further when drag performer and makeup artist Alexis Stone posted images of Carrey at the ceremony with the caption, “Alexis Stone as Jim Carrey in Paris.” Stone, known for elaborate celebrity transformations, later included what appeared to be an AI-generated image of prosthetics and a wig, a visual cue suggesting the post was intended as satire. Nevertheless, the joke contributed to confusion online.

Several celebrities engaged with the post in a lighthearted manner, adding to the viral spread of the speculation.

Despite the online noise, officials from the César Awards maintain there was no impersonator involved. Carrey’s attendance and acceptance of the Honorary César were genuine, and organizers emphasized the preparation and personal significance the actor attached to the occasion.

In short, there was no clone, no body double, and no elaborate disguise. Jim Carrey accepted his Honorary César in Paris, in person.
