Hellfest organizers were forced to introduce unprecedented restrictions on the festival's final day after authorities placed a red heatwave alert, one of the highest weather warnings issued in France.

The measures, announced Sunday morning, marked a significant departure from normal festival operations and reflected growing concerns about the impact of extreme temperatures on the tens of thousands of fans attending the annual metal gathering in Clisson.

Among the most notable changes was a temporary crackdown on alcohol sales. Organizers halted the sale of spirits entirely and limited beer purchases to 25-centiliter servings per transaction. Wine sales were also restricted to a single serving per person. The move came in response to recommendations from local authorities, who warned that alcohol consumption could increase the risk of dehydration and heat-related illnesses as temperatures continued to climb throughout the day.

Festival management also took the unusual step of discouraging families from bringing children to the site. While minors already holding valid tickets were still permitted to attend, Hellfest suspended its reduced-price ticket program for children aged 6 to 16 and publicly advised parents to reconsider attending with younger festivalgoers.

The restrictions highlighted the seriousness of the weather situation facing western France. Red heatwave alerts are issued only during exceptional circumstances and indicate a significant risk to public health. With little shade available across large portions of the festival grounds, organizers faced mounting pressure to adapt operations while keeping performances on schedule.

Throughout the day, additional cooling measures were introduced across the site. Free water stations remained available, extra resources were deployed to help attendees cool down, and medical teams maintained an increased presence around the venue. Festival staff repeatedly encouraged attendees to stay hydrated, wear protective clothing, and seek shelter from direct sunlight whenever possible.

The impact of the heat was visible throughout the grounds as many fans abandoned their usual routines of moving constantly between stages. Instead, groups gathered in shaded areas, crowded around misting stations, and searched for any available relief from the intense temperatures. Medical staff also treated several festivalgoers suffering from heat-related symptoms, underscoring the challenges posed by the extreme weather.

The extraordinary measures added an unexpected chapter to this year's edition of Hellfest, Europe's largest music festival. Despite the restrictions, performances continued as scheduled, allowing the festival to conclude without major disruption.
