Evan Dando, the singer-songwriter and co-founder of the alternative rock band the Lemonheads, has been hospitalized for mental health treatment following reports that he allegedly sent explicit videos to a fan via social media.
In a statement to Rolling Stone, a representative for Dando confirmed that the musician sought medical care shortly after the allegations became public.
“Evan Dando has long struggled with mental health issues dating back to his childhood,” the statement reads. “He’s been admitted to a local hospital where he’s receiving comprehensive help from experienced doctors and mental health professionals.”
The development comes after a fan, identified as “Dawn,” shared her account on journalist Tony Ortega’s Substack, The Underground Bunker. According to her account, she contacted Dando in October through direct messages to congratulate him on the release of Love Chant, the Lemonheads’ first album of original material since 2006’s self-titled release.
Dawn alleged that after an initial exchange, Dando sent her unsolicited explicit video content the following day. Screenshots of the conversation, excluding explicit imagery, were published by Ortega. In her comments to the outlet, Dawn described feeling disturbed by the interaction and expressed concern that similar messages could be sent to others.
Dando has not publicly addressed the allegations.
Now 58, Dando has had a long and often turbulent career in music. He rose to prominence in the early 1990s as the frontman of the Lemonheads, whose blend of punk-inflected pop and alternative rock earned both critical acclaim and commercial success. The band became a staple of the era’s alt-rock scene, propelled by albums such as It’s a Shame About Ray and Come On Feel the Lemonheads.
In recent years, Dando has spoken openly about his personal struggles. In his 2025 memoir, Rumors of My Demise, he detailed decades-long battles with substance abuse and the toll addiction took on his career and relationships. He wrote candidly about periods marked by isolation, deteriorating health, and heavy drug use, acknowledging how addiction hindered his creative output and strained friendships.
Dando currently resides in Brazil with his wife, Antonia Teixeira, and is stepfather to her three children.
The Lemonheads are scheduled to tour later this year in the United Kingdom, with one U.S. date currently booked in support of the Avett Brothers at Red Rocks Amphitheatre. It remains unclear whether the hospitalization will affect those plans.
No additional statements have been released regarding the allegations or Dando’s condition.
