Actress and musician Charlotte MacInnes is advancing her music career while also participating in a high-profile defamation trial involving Rebel Wilson. The legal proceedings, currently unfolding in Australia, stem from disputes tied to the production of the film The Deb, Wilson’s directorial debut.

MacInnes, who plays a leading role in The Deb, released a new single titled “Celestial” this week, marking the first offering from her upcoming debut album Highwater, scheduled for release on June 5 through Atlantic Records. The rollout comes as she continues to testify in a Sydney courtroom regarding a series of allegations and counterclaims involving Wilson and film producer Amanda Ghost.

In a statement accompanying the single, MacInnes described the music as a deeply personal project, calling the creative process “empowering” and “cathartic.” The track’s introspective lyrics, which reference themes of memory, identity, and emotional struggle, are likely to draw attention given the broader context of the legal disputes surrounding her.

At the center of the ongoing litigation is a disputed incident that allegedly took place in September 2023 at Bondi Beach. According to court filings, Wilson previously accused Ghost of inappropriate behavior toward MacInnes following an evening swim, a claim that has been strongly denied by both Ghost and MacInnes. In sworn testimony, MacInnes characterized the situation as a medical emergency, stating that Ghost experienced a reaction to cold water and required assistance. She maintained that there was “nothing sexual or inappropriate” about the encounter.

MacInnes has also challenged Wilson’s public statements about the incident. In court, she denied ever telling Wilson that she felt uncomfortable or had made any complaint about Ghost’s behavior. These assertions contradict earlier claims made by Wilson, including social media posts in which the filmmaker suggested MacInnes had expressed distress and later retracted her account for professional reasons.

The legal conflict extends beyond Australia. Ghost has filed a separate defamation lawsuit against Wilson in Los Angeles, alleging that Wilson’s accusations damaged her reputation and were motivated by disputes over creative credit on The Deb. Wilson, in turn, has brought claims against Ghost alleging breach of contract and fraud.

The film itself, which recently premiered in Australia, has received mixed-to-positive critical responses but has struggled commercially. Its release has been overshadowed by the legal battles involving its key collaborators, drawing attention away from the project’s artistic reception.

MacInnes’ decision to release new music during the trial adds another layer to an already complex situation. Her album Highwater includes collaborations with Ghost, further intertwining the professional and legal relationships among the parties involved. Industry observers note that the timing of the release may intensify public scrutiny, particularly as the case continues to unfold in court.

The defamation proceedings in Sydney are ongoing, with testimony expected to continue in the coming days. Meanwhile, related legal matters in the United States remain active, with a hearing scheduled in Los Angeles County for May 5.
