As Billy Ray Cyrus prepares to release his first album of new material in more than a decade, the country singer is opening up about a serious health crisis that nearly derailed both his life and career.

In a new interview with People, Cyrus revealed that he suffered a near-fatal battle with sepsis in 2024, a medical emergency that ultimately led to temporary vocal paralysis and forced him to confront an uncertain future. While the singer did not disclose extensive details about the illness itself, he described the experience as one of the darkest periods of his life.

The health scare came at a time when Cyrus was already navigating significant personal upheaval. But according to the singer, the physical toll of the illness, and the possibility that he might never sing the same way again, proved especially devastating.

Sepsis, a potentially life-threatening condition caused by the body's extreme response to an infection, can lead to organ failure and other serious complications if not treated quickly. For a performer whose career has been built around his voice, the subsequent diagnosis of temporary vocal paralysis created an entirely new set of challenges.

Although Cyrus did not elaborate on the specifics of his recovery, he described his return to health as nothing short of miraculous. He also credited an unlikely source for helping him find motivation during a period when he was struggling physically and emotionally: his grandson, Bear.

According to Cyrus, the turning point came during a simple interaction with the young boy, the son of his son, Braison Cyrus. The singer recalled that Bear, who was five years old at the time, suddenly looked at him and said three words: "Try again."

The moment carried unusual significance for Cyrus because, he said, his grandson had never spoken directly to him before. "My little grandson Bear looked at me and said, 'Try again,'" Cyrus recalled. "Up until that moment, he had never spoken to me at all. I wasn't even sure if he knew my name."

The health crisis unfolded during a turbulent chapter in Cyrus' personal life. In 2022, he and Tish Cyrus finalized the end of their marriage after nearly three decades together. The divorce marked the conclusion of one of country music's most prominent relationships and came after years of public speculation about the couple's future.

Cyrus later married singer Firerose, but that relationship also ended in 2024 following a highly publicized split. In the months that followed, the singer began a new relationship with Elizabeth Hurley, which the pair confirmed publicly in 2025.

Now, with his health improving and a new album on the horizon, Cyrus appears focused on moving forward.

His upcoming project, The Hill, arrives June 16 and marks his first full album of original material in more than ten years. The release is particularly meaningful because it reflects a renewed creative partnership within the Cyrus family. His son, Braison Cyrus, contributed as both a producer and songwriter on several tracks.

The album also includes a collaboration with daughter Noah Cyrus. Their duet, “On Our Way Along,” was released earlier this year and offered fans an early glimpse of the project.

For much of the past decade, Cyrus has remained a visible figure in entertainment largely because of his family, his television work, and his role as the father of global superstar Miley Cyrus. But The Hill represents a return to the center of his own musical story at a time when he admits there were moments he wasn't sure he would get another chance.
