The race to become the next James Bond is officially on.

Amazon MGM Studios has confirmed that the search for the next actor to play cinema’s most famous spy is now actively underway, marking the clearest sign yet that the Bond franchise is finally moving into its post-Daniel Craig era.

In a statement released this week, the studio confirmed it has begun the casting process for the next 007, though it made clear fans should not expect immediate answers. Amazon MGM said it would not comment on specific names while the process remains ongoing, but promised updates when the timing is right.

The announcement brings momentum to a franchise that has remained in transition since 2021’s No Time to Die, Craig’s final appearance as Bond after a 15-year run that redefined the character for modern audiences. Since then, speculation over his replacement has become one of Hollywood’s favorite long-running guessing games, with fans, bookmakers, and entertainment media constantly floating potential successors.

The next Bond film already has major creative pieces in place. Last year, acclaimed filmmaker Denis Villeneuve was announced as director, a move that immediately signaled Amazon’s intention to position the next Bond as a major cinematic event rather than a routine franchise continuation. Villeneuve, best known for Dune, Blade Runner 2049, and Arrival, will also executive produce alongside Tanya Lapointe, while veteran producers Amy Pascal and David Heyman are attached to oversee the project.

Villeneuve has spoken openly about the weight of taking on Bond, describing the character as sacred territory and emphasizing his desire to respect the franchise’s legacy while creating a path forward for future stories. His appointment suggested the next Bond chapter may aim for a more auteur-driven direction while still preserving the traditional DNA that has made the series one of the most enduring in film history.

The screenplay is being written by Steven Knight, the creator of Peaky Blinders, another sign the studio is leaning toward prestige storytelling rather than pure spectacle. Knight has previously described Bond less as a conventional franchise character and more as a modern mythological figure, comparing him to cultural icons like Robin Hood and King Arthur, suggesting he understands the larger symbolic weight attached to the role.

What remains unanswered, of course, is the question everyone actually cares about: who gets the tuxedo?

Several names have circulated for years. Henry Cavill remains one of the most persistent fan favorites, while Aaron Taylor-Johnson has repeatedly surfaced in industry rumors. Idris Elba has long been part of the conversation, though he has often downplayed the speculation. More recent names include Tom Holland, Jacob Elordi, and Callum Turner, reflecting the franchise’s potential interest in going younger.
